Gulbenkian support for short courses in the performing arts in the PALOP countries
The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation’s initiative aims to strengthen arts education in the Portuguese-speaking regions of Africa, providing opportunities for intensive learning in areas such as theatre, dance, music and interdisciplinary performance. The courses, lasting between two and four weeks, are designed for emerging artists and professionals who wish to deepen their understanding of contemporary techniques, experiment with new creative languages and establish collaborative networks between the PALOP countries and Portugal.
Each edition features internationally renowned guest lecturers, practical workshops, constructive critique sessions and public presentations that enable participants to put what they have learnt into practice. In addition to the training component, the support includes grants to cover travel, accommodation and materials, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent access to high-quality training.
Applicants must submit an artistic portfolio, a letter of motivation and a work plan demonstrating how the course will contribute to their professional development and to the strengthening of the cultural sector in their home countries. The selection process prioritises geographical diversity, a balance between disciplines and the potential for the proposals to have an impact on the community.
Upon completion of the programme, participants receive a certificate recognised by the Gulbenkian Foundation and are invited to join a community of alumni that promotes ongoing exchanges, artist residencies and collaborative projects. This network has proved fundamental to the creation of works that engage with local identities and global trends in the contemporary performing arts scene.
Deadline for applications: 30 September 2026.
