The Afreximbank 2027 Internship Programme for young Africans (stipend of US$1,000 per month) is a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates wishing to gain practical experience in the field of intra-African trade and sustainable economic development. The programme, organised by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), offers a monthly stipend of 1,000 US dollars, as well as access to specialised training, mentoring from senior executives and the chance to participate in strategic projects that have a direct impact on the continent’s markets.
The successful candidates will join multidisciplinary teams in the areas of export finance, risk analysis, technological innovation and public-private partnerships. During the six-month placement, trainees will be involved in real-world tasks, such as conducting market research, assisting with the structuring of trade operations and monitoring financing initiatives for small and medium-sized African enterprises. This practical experience enables participants to develop technical and interpersonal skills that are highly valued by regional and international employers.
To be eligible, you must be a citizen of an African country, have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in subjects such as economics, finance, international law, engineering or political science, and demonstrate a proven interest in Africa’s economic development. Fluency in English is essential, whilst knowledge of French or Portuguese would be an advantage.
The selection process involves the review of CVs, a cover letter and online interviews with Afreximbank representatives. Successful candidates will be notified in advance and will receive detailed guidance on logistics, health insurance and support with settling in the country where the placement will take place (usually an Afreximbank office in East, West or Southern Africa).
Upon completion of the placement, participants receive a certificate of completion and have the opportunity to be considered for entry-level positions within the bank or at partner institutions, thereby enhancing their career prospects in development finance and international trade.
