Girls Who Click – Nature photography mentoring (young women)

The “1-10-2026 Girls Who Click – Nature Photography Mentoring (young women)” project aims to empower young women in Cape Verde through the art of nature photography. In an archipelago of rare natural beauty and biodiversity, it is essential to promote environmental awareness and skills development amongst future generations. This initiative, in collaboration with organisations such as Terra Viva Grants and Girls Who Click, offers a unique opportunity for girls to explore their creative potential and become active voices in the conservation of their natural heritage.

The mentoring programme will be designed to guide participants from the basics of photography through to advanced techniques, with a particular focus on capturing the essence of Cape Verde’s flora and fauna. Through practical workshops in iconic locations, theoretical learning sessions and personalised support from experienced photographers, the young women will have the opportunity to develop a critical eye and a deeper understanding of nature. We believe that photography is not only an art form, but also a powerful tool for education and environmental activism.

This initiative goes beyond the mere transfer of technical knowledge. The aim is to create a platform for empowerment, where every participant feels that their voice is valued and their unique perspective celebrated. By connecting young women with mentors, fellow participants and the scientific and environmental community, we are building a support network that will endure long after the mentoring period has ended. The challenges faced by young women in some communities require innovative approaches to promote their active participation in STEM fields and conservation.

The expected impact of this project is multifaceted. It is hoped that the young women will develop professional skills in photography, which will open doors to future careers in areas such as ecotourism, environmental journalism or research. Furthermore, by documenting Cape Verde’s natural wealth, the participants will help raise awareness amongst the general public about the importance of conservation. We want these future leaders to become ambassadors for nature, inspiring their communities and contributing to a more sustainable Cape Verde.

The deadline for submitting applications for this project is 31 December 2024.
