Breakthrough Junior Challenge 2026 – Students aged 13–18 ($250,000)

A Breakthrough Junior Challenge is coming to Cape Verde in 2026 with a total prize fund of 250,000 dollars, aimed at young people aged between 13 and 18 who can combine creativity, scientific rigour and effective communication. This international competition seeks to discover emerging talent capable of translating complex concepts in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) into short, dynamic videos that are accessible to the general public. By taking part, young Cape Verdeans will not only have the opportunity to gain significant international recognition, but also to receive financial support to develop research projects or outreach initiatives in their schools and communities.

How the competition works

  1. Enrolment – Each candidate must submit an individual application via the official platform, stating their name, age, school and a contact person.
  2. Video production – The challenge is to produce a 2- to 3-minute video that explains, in a clear and engaging way, a STEM concept of the participant’s choice. Participants may use animation, live-action footage, music or any other resource that enhances the viewer’s understanding and interest.
  3. Evaluation – An international panel of judges, comprising scientists, educators and communications professionals, will assess the entries’ originality, scientific accuracy and ability to engage the public.
  4. Awards – The three best entries will receive, respectively, US$ 100,000, US$ 75 000 and US$ 75 000 respectively, which may be invested in scholarships, research teams or outreach projects.

Why take part?

  • Skills development – The process encourages critical thinking, independent learning and the ability to explain complex ideas in simple terms.
  • International visibility – The winning videos are shared on the organisation’s social media channels Breakthrough Junior Challenge and may be presented at international scientific events.
  • Impact on the community – By sharing the knowledge they have gained, young people inspire their peers and spark an interest in STEM subjects in Cape Verdean schools.

Support and available resources

The Ministry of Education, in partnership with local universities and non-governmental organisations, offers free workshops on video production, methodological guidance and access to well-equipped laboratories. These sessions are held on the islands of Santiago, São Vicente and Sal, ensuring the inclusion of young people from all regions of the archipelago.

Deadline and application link

The deadline for registration is 15 September 2026. Don’t miss the chance to represent Cape Verde in a competition that celebrates youth innovation and the popularisation of science.
