Fostering Collaborative Research for Health Equity in Cape Verde

Cape Verde serves as a vital real-world laboratory for understanding and mitigating health inequalities, a central theme in the call for applications for the NNF-IAS ‘Inequity in Health’ Fellowships, with a deadline of 1 October 2026. Our proposal aims to catalyse cutting-edge research that addresses the complex challenges contributing to health inequalities in Cape Verde, whilst promoting innovative and sustainable solutions. This archipelago, with its unique geography and socio-economic history, offers an invaluable insight into how factors such as limited access to resources, climate change, migration and the social determinants of health interact to create and perpetuate inequalities.

We firmly believe that an interdisciplinary approach is essential to unravelling the layers of complexity surrounding health inequity. Our call for proposals welcomes projects covering areas such as social epidemiology, public health, health economics, anthropology and environmental sciences, amongst others. Particular value will be placed on research that focuses on identifying the most vulnerable populations, analysing the factors underlying disparities in access to and the quality of healthcare, and evaluating the impact of existing policies and interventions.

In addition to scientific excellence, we are looking for proposals that demonstrate a genuine commitment to local capacity-building and knowledge transfer. The NNF-IAS Fellowships in Cape Verde should not merely be a means of producing scientific articles, but also of strengthening local research infrastructure, training new talent and developing lasting partnerships between national and international institutions. We believe that the real impact of research is realised when findings are translated into concrete actions that directly benefit communities.

Cape Verde has made remarkable progress in various areas of health, but significant challenges remain that require ongoing attention and in-depth research. By focusing on health inequity, we not only contribute to the advancement of global science, but also to the direct improvement of the quality of life of Cape Verdeans. The NNF-IAS Fellowships represent an unprecedented opportunity to catalyse this change.

The deadline for submitting applications is 1 October 2026.
