Deadline: 25 February 2024
Applications are now open for the Stanford African Scholars in Global Health Programme (SASH) 2024-2025 . This three-year programme supports 24 mid-career doctors from African countries to travel to Stanford for a period of six weeks, acquiring a set of specific skills identified by African academics as a necessity for improving health outcomes at their academic institution.
The doctors will then return to their home countries to conduct a year-long clinical improvement project focussed on the set of skills they have identified. This inaugural programme is led by the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, in partnership with the Stanford Center for Medical Education, and funded by an independent educational grant from Pfizer.

Overview
Stanford will host a total of 24 fellows from various groups during the 3-year programme (between 2024-2027). Each scholarship consists of two phases: the first at Stanford; the second in the country of their home institution.
Phase 1
Each group of accepted fellows will begin their fellowship with six weeks at Stanford, where they will be appointed visiting instructors. The programme will be tailored to their interests and implementation project topics. The scholars will make observations in clinical settings at Stanford hospitals and clinics and participate in other learning activities, including meetings with Stanford experts and participation in lectures and simulation activities, where appropriate.
Each fellow will have a mentor from the Stanford faculty, who will advise and train them. To facilitate two-way learning, fellows will have the opportunity to earn Continuing Medical Education credits, give lectures and make presentations to the Stanford community.
The fellow's time at Stanford will promote quality improvement at their home institution, including, among others, subspeciality knowledge, treatment and management of complex cases and/or advanced medical technology. They will also observe different approaches to care, health systems management and medical education, all designed to improve the set of competences identified and needed at their home institution.
Phase 2
After training at Stanford, the scholars will return to their academic institutions with a grant of up to US$ 50,000 from Pfizer, provided directly to their institution, to implement their proposed individual project over the next 12 to 18 months. They will participate in virtual meetings with their Stanford mentors, as appropriate, for ongoing support. CIGH will hold a final meeting (probably in East Africa) in Year 3 with all the scholars, where they will give a presentation on the impact their projects have achieved.
