Registration for the Kofi Annan Global Health Leadership Programme 2024 are now open. The scholarship aims to support aspiring public health leaders (Fellows) in Africa in acquiring advanced skills and competencies to create strategies, manage and lead public health programmes that will positively transform public health in Africa.
Fellows admitted to the programme will be senior public health professionals from African Union Member States who will contribute to and lead the implementation of a new public health order for Africa and, in turn, develop the next generation of public health leaders. As Africa CDC reflects on the remarkable progress of the Kofi Annan Fellowship Programme in Global Health Leadership, having graduated 39 fellows from over 20 African countries and currently nurturing 20 more from 14 African countries, they witness the tangible impact of this visionary initiative. Alumni of the programme have not only honed their leadership qualities, but are actively shaping the future of healthcare across the continent. With two fellows writing books, others replicating the programme in their institutions and one even rising to the role of government minister, the ripple effect of this leadership programme is undeniable.

For Cohort 4, they continue to encourage a diversity of applicants from across the continent and, specifically for Cohort 4, Public Mental Health Professionals are encouraged to apply. In addition, senior staff working in government ministries and National Public Health Institutes (NPHI) are also strongly encouraged to apply.
Programme details
The fellowship will support 12 months of high-level professional development in advanced public health leadership, which includes acquiring skills in health diplomacy, change management, policy influencing, among others. Fellows will be supported by experienced experts in relevant fields from Africa and the diaspora.
At the end of the programme, the fellows will have developed competences:
- for competent leadership styles that influence and empower others to achieve challenging multidimensional health goals;
- framing and developing a viable strategic vision for bold but achievable goals for positive health outcomes;
- for globally competent and comprehensive leadership, with attributes such as vision, resilience, flexibility and efficiency;
- guiding the complex environment of public health practice to achieve and maintain a positive impact; and in health policy, negotiation, partnerships and health diplomacy.

- Africa CDC will provide all learning and development materials and cover all costs associated with the scholarship, including travel, per diems and insurance during the residential placements.
Eligibility
Candidates for the scholarship must:
- Be citizens of a Member State of the African Union;
- Have a postgraduate qualification in a relevant area of public health;
- Have 10 years of professional experience in any area of public health, including but not limited to health, human medicine, finance, health economics, health policy, animal health or environmental health;
- Be employed full-time in any area of public health, in a public or private institution in Africa;
- Have a good track record or be able to demonstrate the potential for effective leadership in public health, where they can have a positive impact on the public health outcomes of populations in Africa.
Selection criteria
The selection for the scholarship will be made by an independent committee made up of experts from Africa CDC, the African Union and partners. Application documents must provide clear and detailed information about the applicant, their values and experience in relation to the following criteria:
- 10 years of professional experience
- vision and future impact
- devotion to duty and readiness to defend public health initiatives in Africa
- ability to learn and use their talents optimally
- personal and professional integrity.
