Registration is now open for the Whickers Film & TV Funding Award 2024 . The Film & TV Funding Award is given annually to an emerging filmmaker from anywhere in the world with the most promising proposal for a documentary directed by a director.

The Whickers were created in 2015 to fund and recognise original and innovative documentaries. They seek to use the generous legacy of our namesake, pioneering voiceover artist Alan Whicker, to support emerging filmmakers and audio documentarians in the funding and production of director-led programmes.

Prize

  • There is a main prize of £100,000 and a development prize for the runner-up of £20,000.

Eligibility

  • Open to filmmakers from anywhere in the world. They encourage international filmmakers to apply;
  • It must be the first documentary of more than 50 minutes by the filmmaker or filmmakers in which the director or co-director is credited;
  • Projects must be in the late development to early production phase at the time of application - this is not a finishing fund;
  • The prize money cannot be paid to an individual. Applicants must therefore: provide proof of company viability; have a fiscal sponsor on board; have a production company nominee on board to set up a dedicated project account for their film; or confirm that they are willing to set up a limited company and a dedicated project account if they are selected;
  • Up to six minutes of original race footage is required at the time of registration;
  • It must be accessible to an English-speaking audience - either in English or subtitled in English;
  • Applicants must have an executive producer on board at the time of registration;
  • If selected, applicants must be available to travel to the UK in June to present their project at the Sheffield DocFest (reasonable travel and accommodation covered by The Whickers);
  • They ask that the budget for your documentary of more than 50 minutes does not exceed £400,000 at the time of submission;
  • Applicants who at the time of application have other sources of funding in excess of £300,000 are not eligible.
