The Thomson Young Journalist Award represents a unique opportunity for young journalists from Cape Verde who wish to hone their skills in an international environment of excellence. Organised by the Thomson Foundation, the award aims to recognise journalistic work that stands out for its rigour, creativity and social impact, offering the winner a fully funded trip to London to take part in workshops, visits to leading newsrooms and meetings with award-winning professionals in the sector.

Applicants must be aged between 18 and 30, be resident in Cape Verde and submit a portfolio comprising at least three journalistic pieces published in the last 12 months – these may be written, audiovisual or multimedia reports. In addition to previous experience, a commitment to issues of sustainable development, governance and human rights is highly valued, as these are areas the foundation considers to be priorities for the future of independent media. The award covers airfares, accommodation, meals and a grant to participate in the scheduled activities, enabling the young journalist to immerse themselves in the British media ecosystem and forge lasting connections with colleagues from across the globe.

The selection process takes place in two stages: first, a technical assessment by a panel of editors and academics; second, an online interview in which the shortlisted candidates outline their motivations and plans for applying the knowledge acquired in London. Those interested should submit their application via the online form, attaching their portfolio, an up-to-date CV and a cover letter explaining how the experience will contribute to their professional development and to the strengthening of journalism in Cape Verde.

Deadline for applications: 9 August 2026
