The “EU Prize for (Academic) Champions of Gender Equality” is an awards system that aims to strengthen and complement the requirement for organizations teaching Higher education and research institutions applying for Horizon Europe must have a Gender Equality Plan (GEP) in place as an eligibility criterion. This is a tool to promote inclusive gender equality plans and policies within the framework of the new EEI political agenda, as well as an enabler for the university transformation agenda defined in the new EEI, in synergy with the European Education Area (EEA) and the European Higher Education Area (EHEA, Bologna process), and in line with the new Communication on a European Strategy for Universities, adopted on 18 January 2022.
Objectives
- The Prize will be awarded to four academic or research organizations, and applicants may apply to one of the following three prize categories:
- Advocates for Sustainable Gender Equality: Organizations that are able to demonstrate a significant and sustained record of activity and a high level of achievement through the implementation of their GEP;
- Newly arrived champions of gender equality: Organizations that have recently begun implementing a GEP and can demonstrate the greatest progress in their implementation and results achieved;
- Inclusive champions of gender equality: Organizations that have developed the most innovative inclusive GEP, addressing intersections with other social categories such as ethnicity, social origin, sexual orientation, and gender identity (LGBTIQ) or disability .
Information on financing
- Each prize winner will receive €100,000.
- Each prize winner will receive €0.1 million. The maximum prize budget is €0.4 million. There will be two winners in the “Sustainable Gender Equality Champions” category, one winner in the “Newcomer Gender Equality Champions” category, and one winner in the “Inclusive Gender Equality Champions” category.

- The awards will raise public awareness of the importance of addressing gender equality in academic and research organizations through institutional change, encourage a high degree of commitment to implementing inclusive GEPs, and create a community of advocates who inspire other academic and research organizations to become advocates for equality themselves.
Election criteria
- To be eligible, the candidate must:
- to be a legal entity (public or private body)
- to be an organization that conducts research, including a higher education institution (e.g., a university)
- to be established in one of the eligible countries, that is:
- EU Member State (including overseas countries and territories (OCTs))
- non-EU country associated with Horizon Europe (associated countries)
- To meet the mandatory eligibility criteria of the Horizon Europe Gender Equality Plan. This means that the applicant's GEP must meet the following four mandatory process-related requirements:
- Publication: a formal document published on the institution's website and signed by senior management;
- Dedicated resources: commitment of resources and expertise in gender equality to implement the plan;
- Data collection and monitoring: data disaggregated by sex/gender on staff (and students, for the establishments in question) and annual reports based on indicators;
- training Awareness-raising/training on gender equality and unconscious gender bias for employees and decision-makers.
- To be considered as meeting the Horizon Europe GEP eligibility criteria, the applicant must have properly completed the corresponding GEP self-declaration questionnaire presented in the Legal Information tab of the Applicant Register, accessible through the Funding and Competition Opportunities Portal.
- Only applications submitted by a single legal entity will be accepted. Joint applications will not be permitted.
- Candidates who have already received an EU or Euratom award are not eligible for a second award for the same activities. Winners of any category in the 2022 edition of the EU Gender Equality Champions Award are ineligible for any category of this award.
- All candidates must register in the Participant Registry — before the deadline of the call for applications — and will have to be validated by the Central Validation Service (REA Validation). For validation, candidates will be asked to upload documents proving their legal status and origin.
Ineligible
- Candidates who are subject to an EU exclusion decision or who are in one of the following exclusion situations that prevent them from receiving EU funding are NOT eligible to participate:
- Bankruptcy, liquidation, matters administered by the courts, settlement with creditors, suspension of activities. commercials or other similar procedures (including procedures for persons with unlimited liability for the applicant's debts)
- in violation of tax or social security obligations (including if done by persons with unlimited liability for the applicant's debts)
- guilty of serious professional misconduct (including if committed by persons with powers of representation, decision-making or control, beneficial owners or persons essential to the awarding/implementation of the prize)
- committed fraud, corruption, links to a criminal organization, money laundering, crimes related to terrorism (including the financing of terrorism), work children or trafficking in human beings (including when carried out by persons with powers of representation, decision-making or control, beneficial owners or persons essential to the awarding/implementation of the prize)
- They demonstrated significant deficiencies in fulfilling the main obligations arising from a purchase agreement. subsidy , award, expert contract or similar from the EU (including if made by persons with powers of representation, decision-making or control, beneficial owners or persons who are essential for the awarding/implementation of the award)
