The Royal Society Africa Prize seeks to recognise research scientists based in Africa who are making an innovative contribution to science. The medal is bronze, awarded annually and is accompanied by a gift of £2,000. The prize was previously the Royal Society's Pfizer Prize, which was last awarded in 2016.

Benefits
The winner will receive a bronze medal, accompanied by a £15,000 grant for their research project and a gift of £2,000.

Eligibility Criteria
The Royal Society Africa Prize will be awarded to an individual for an outstanding and innovative contribution to biological science, including basic medical science, which contributes significantly to capacity building in Africa.

The prize is aimed at researchers at an early stage in their research career (generally having received their doctorate in the last 10-15 years) with the potential to build a research project to follow on from the prize.

Research must be based in Africa.

Nominations can be made by senior academics and members of national science academies.

The project and the nominee must be linked to an African centre of excellence, which would normally be a university or equivalent research centre.

The Prize is normally awarded to an individual who has not yet reached full professor status.
