Funding to Strengthen Local Communication and Cultural Preservation
The 2027 Call for Proposals for Indigenous Community Media Projects opens up new horizons for strengthening freedom of expression and preserving cultural heritage through local media. This international grant programme is designed to support initiatives that give a voice to local communities, promoting narrative diversity, social inclusion and community-based journalism. In Cape Verde, where a rich oral tradition and cultural identity play a central role in daily life across the islands, this support represents a vital boost to the capacity-building of local communicators.
Objectives and Expected Impact
The main focus of this programme is to build the capacity of community radio stations, audiovisual producers and independent digital platforms. By providing direct financial support, the aim is to modernise equipment, offer technical training and encourage the creation of content that addresses key issues, such as:
- Preserving memory and traditions: Documentation of oral narratives, ancestral knowledge and local artistic expressions.
- Sustainability and climate: Reports on climate resilience, water resource management and the blue economy on the islands.
- Inclusion and citizenship: Promoting human rights, gender equality and young people’s participation in public life.
Who can apply?
The call for proposals is open to a wide range of civil society organisations based in Cape Verde and other eligible regions, namely:
- Community associations and non-profit non-governmental organisations (NGOs);
- Independent media organisations and community radio stations;
- Digital content creators, storytellers and local journalists.
The selected projects will receive funding tailored to the scope of the proposal, as well as access to technical mentoring networks and international knowledge-sharing initiatives.
