Environmental Sustainability in the Cultural Sector of Cape Verde: An Opportunity for Development

Environmental sustainability The cultural sector is emerging as a fundamental pillar for global development, and Cape Verde, an archipelago with precious natural resources and a vibrant cultural identity, cannot remain on the sidelines of this transformation. Recognizing the potential of the cultural sector as an agent of change, this proposal aims to promote the implementation of environmentally responsible practices through the establishment of partnerships with Swiss Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and cultural institutions.

Cape Verde's cultural sector, from music and dance to visual arts and historical heritage, represents a vibrant expression of its identity. However, its operation, like that of any sector, can have an environmental impact. The use of materials, waste management, energy consumption, and event organization are aspects that can be optimized to minimize the ecological footprint. This proposal therefore seeks to promote the adoption of sustainable measures through: research and mapping of current practices, capacity building and training, implementation of pilot projects, and dissemination of best practices.

Partnering with Swiss NGOs and cultural institutions offers a unique opportunity. Switzerland, renowned for its commitment to sustainability and its extensive experience in environmental management, can share valuable knowledge and resources. Swiss NGOs, with their expertise in development projects and resource mobilization capacity, can support the financing and implementation of initiatives. Swiss cultural institutions, in turn, can build cultural bridges, promoting exchanges and the joint creation of artistic projects that integrate environmental themes.

The first phase of the project will consist of conducting a comprehensive survey of existing environmental practices in the Cape Verdean cultural sector. This analysis will identify the main challenges and opportunities, allowing for the definition of a strategic action plan. The second phase will focus on training professionals in the sector. Workshops, seminars, and specialized training will provide the knowledge and tools necessary for the adoption of sustainable practices. The third phase will be dedicated to the implementation of concrete pilot projects. These projects, focusing on areas such as sustainable event production, the use of ecological materials, and waste management, will serve as models of good practices and allow for the testing of innovative solutions. The fourth phase will consist of the dissemination of good practices. Through the creation of an online platform, the organization of events, and the publication of informative materials, the project will seek to raise public awareness and multiply the impact of the actions.

The expected results include a significant reduction in the environmental impact of the Cape Verdean cultural sector, increased environmental awareness among professionals and the general public, the strengthening of local capacities, and the creation of new opportunities for international collaboration. Additionally, the project aims to create a replicable model that can be adapted and applied to other sectors of the Cape Verdean economy. In the long term, environmental sustainability in the cultural sector will contribute to the preservation of Cape Verde's natural and cultural heritage, to economic development, and to improving the quality of life of the population.

We believe this project is a strategic investment in the future of Cape Verde. By combining the country's cultural richness with the need to protect the environment, we are building a more just, resilient, and sustainable society. We invite NGOs and institutions to join us on this journey, which aims not only to mitigate environmental impact but also to foster creativity, innovation, and sustainable economic development in Cape Verde.
