UCT’s PhD programmes in Climate and Development: A Transformative Opportunity for Cape Verde
The University of Cape Town (UCT) offers a unique opportunity for Cape Verde through its twelve fully-funded PhD programmes in Climate and Development, with funding totalling R390,000 for 2027. This initiative represents a beacon of hope and a catalyst for advancing research and sustainable development in the archipelago, one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change.
Cape Verde, with its island economy and dependence on vulnerable natural resources, faces pressing challenges relating to rising sea levels, desertification and water scarcity. The training of local specialists in climate and development is therefore not only desirable but absolutely essential for the formulation and implementation of effective adaptation and mitigation policies. These PhD programmes at UCT provide a platform of excellence for young Cape Verdeans to deepen their knowledge, develop advanced research skills and contribute directly to innovative and contextually relevant solutions to the problems facing the country.
Fellows will have the opportunity to work with renowned academics in the field of climate science, taking part in cutting-edge research projects spanning a range of areas, from climate modelling and impact assessment to environmental economics and development policy. This multidisciplinary environment is crucial for a holistic understanding of complex climate challenges and for the development of integrated approaches.
By investing in the training of highly qualified staff, Cape Verde will be strengthening its institutional capacity to tackle challenges proactively, promoting resilience and ensuring a more sustainable future for its communities. The PhD graduates will return to Cape Verde equipped with in-depth knowledge and a valuable network of contacts, ready to lead the transition to a green economy and to influence policies that safeguard the natural heritage and the well-being of the population.
UCT, recognised worldwide for its academic excellence and its strong commitment to research relevant to the African continent, offers an environment conducive to intellectual and professional growth. This collaboration with this prestigious institution represents a significant step for Cape Verde on its journey towards sustainability.
