The 2026 Climate and Health Challenge (Global) is a crucial initiative for the future of Cape Verde. The growing urgency of climate change and its direct impact on public health call for innovative and collaborative solutions. This project, known as the ‘Dawn Project’, is at the forefront of this fight, seeking not only to mitigate the negative effects, but also to build resilience and promote sustainable development for all. Its significance transcends borders; it is a global challenge that Cape Verde, with its specific vulnerabilities, has both the opportunity and the need to tackle head-on.

The islands of Cape Verde face particular risks due to their geographical location and their heavy reliance on tourism and natural resources. Rising sea levels, desertification and a shortage of drinking water are tangible threats affecting food security, public health and the archipelago’s economy. At the same time, changes in climate patterns may exacerbate the spread of vector-borne diseases, as well as increase the occurrence of extreme events that impact healthcare infrastructure. The “Dawn Project – Climate and Health Challenge 2026 (Global)” offers a promising framework for addressing these issues in an integrated manner.

This project specifically aims to strengthen Cape Verde’s capacity to adapt its health policies to climate realities, by promoting research, training for professionals and the implementation of early warning systems. Participation in the “Climate and Health Challenge 2026” will facilitate the exchange of knowledge with international partners, provide access to funding for local projects and enable the development of community-based strategies that engage citizens in building a healthier and more resilient future. The global scale of the challenge underlines the importance of coordinated action and the sharing of best practice.

In addition, the project encourages the development of innovative and technological solutions, such as more effective environmental and health monitoring systems, the promotion of renewable energy in the health sector, and the implementation of more sustainable agricultural practices that reduce the carbon footprint and ensure food security. Collaboration between the government, the private sector, civil society organisations and local communities will be key to the success of the ‘Dawn Project’. We believe that, through this joint effort, Cape Verde will not only be able to tackle the challenges posed by climate change, but also emerge as a model of resilience and sustainable development.
