Cape Verde faces severe climate challenges, characterised by cyclical droughts and soil that is difficult to cultivate. The introduction of technologies such as desalination for irrigation, hydroponics, monitoring via IoT sensors and smart water management systems could revolutionise local productivity. With this financial support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), companies, cooperatives and tech start-ups in Cape Verde have the opportunity to scale up solutions that mitigate the effects of climate change.
Who Can Apply and How Can the Funding Be Used?
The funding, which ranges from 100,000 to 2.5 million dollars, is intended for organisations based in the Sub-Saharan Africa region. In the Cape Verdean context, the following are eligible:
- Agritech start-ups who develop software or hardware for precision farming.
- Agricultural co-operatives who wish to digitise their distribution and logistics chains.
- SMEs in the agri-food sector focused on sustainable storage solutions to prevent food waste.
The funds should be used to acquire new technologies, train local staff for the digital transition, expand technological infrastructure, and implement pilot projects with a significant social and environmental impact in Cape Verdean rural communities.
