Support for Archives at Risk: Digitization of Heritage

The program “Support for Archives at Risk: Digitization of Heritage” aims to preserve the historical and cultural memory of Cape Verde through the digitization of documents and archives at risk of deterioration or loss. This ambitious project recognizes the vital importance of documentary heritage for national identity and for promoting the cultural and tourism development of the archipelago. The initiative aims, therefore, to ensure accessibility to these primary sources for future generations and to strengthen academic research.

The choice of Cape Verde as the focus of this program stems from the country's rich history, marked by centuries of cultural exchange, colonization, the struggle for independence, and immigration. This complex and fascinating legacy is largely documented in archives scattered throughout the country, in varying states of preservation. Many of these documents, from parish and administrative records to personal letters and manuscripts, are in precarious condition, subject to natural deterioration, but also to the impact of environmental factors such as humidity and pests, or even storage deficiencies. Digitization therefore emerges as an urgent and effective solution to ensure their long-term preservation.

The proposed project encompasses several distinct phases, designed to ensure its effectiveness and sustainability. Initially, a comprehensive assessment of endangered archives will be carried out, identifying the most vulnerable documents and defining digitization priorities. This phase will include training local teams in preventive conservation and digitization techniques, ensuring knowledge transfer and community empowerment.

The second phase focuses on the actual digitization process. This will include the acquisition of high-quality equipment – scanners, computers, and software – and the creation of a digital document management system (DMS) for the organization, cataloging, and secure storage of digital files. Digitization will be carried out with rigorous criteria, ensuring maximum fidelity to the originals. The resolution and image quality will be appropriate for different purposes, from academic research to reproduction for exhibitions and promotional materials.

One of the project's main concerns is accessibility. The digitized documents will be made available online through a free and intuitive access platform, allowing researchers, students, and the general public to consult the archives remotely. The system will be designed to guarantee the protection of intellectual property rights and the confidentiality of personal data, where applicable. Additionally, workshops and seminars will be held to promote the use of the platform and raise awareness of the importance of preserving documentary heritage.

The sustainability component is fundamental. The project is not limited to digitization. It will include the creation of a continuous maintenance plan for the equipment and the digital system, staff training to ensure its long-term management, and the promotion of partnerships with local and international institutions to secure funding and program continuity. Regular project evaluation, through performance indicators, will be crucial to identify challenges, optimize processes, and ensure its effectiveness over time.

The success of this program will have a significant impact on Cape Verde. It will strengthen national identity, promote cultural tourism, facilitate academic research, and enrich knowledge about the archipelago's history and culture. By ensuring the preservation of endangered heritage, this project invests in Cape Verde's future, guaranteeing that future generations can connect with their roots and celebrate the richness of their history.
