The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the 2024 edition of its PCT Fellowship Program, organized by the PCT Translation Division. This program is designed to provide valuable training and practical experience for postgraduate students specializing in terminology, translation, post-editing, translation technology, and technical specialties in the field of intellectual property.
Brotherhood Positions
The scholarship program offers five distinct positions:
- Terminology Scholarship Recipients: The training involves creating terminology entries for the PCT Termbase, followed by publication in WIPO Pearl.
- Translation Fellows: Participants will receive training in translating patent abstracts and patent examination documents.
- Post-edition fellows: This program focuses on training in the post-editing of patent abstracts and automatically translated examination documents (PEMT).
- Translation Technology Fellows: The training covers the use and support of translation and terminology management systems, as well as machine translation systems.
- Technical Specialist Scholarship Recipients: Individuals with prior experience in the industry or as researchers in a specific technical discipline, providing specialized knowledge to PCT translators while receiving training in the PCT system.
Participants will be mentored and trained by the dedicated team from WIPO's PCT Translation Division during their fellowship in Geneva. Fellowships typically last a minimum of three months, during which fellows receive a monthly stipend of 5,000 Swiss francs (taxable), along with medical coverage. WIPO also assists with travel and visa arrangements, although fellowships cannot be conducted remotely.
Requirements
Terminology Bag
- Current pursuit or recent completion of an advanced degree (Master's, PhD, or equivalent) in terminology, translation, a related linguistic discipline, or a technical field.
- Strong linguistic ability.
- Native speakers of Arabic, Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish with excellent knowledge of English are invited to apply.
Translation Grant
- Currently pursuing or recently completed an advanced degree in translation, terminology, a related linguistic discipline, or a technical field.
- Strong linguistic ability.
- Candidates must translate into their native language.
- Applications are accepted for Japanese-English and Korean-English language combinations.
Post-editing grant
- Currently pursuing or recently completed an advanced degree in translation/post-editing, terminology, a related linguistic discipline, or a technical field.
- Strong linguistic ability.
- Post-editing should be done in the native language (target language).
- Applications are accepted for combinations of Chinese to English and English to French languages.
Translation Technology Grant
- Currently pursuing or recently completed an advanced degree in translation technology, translation, a linguistic discipline related to a translation technology component, or a technical field such as computational linguistics or information technology.
- Strong linguistic ability.
- Candidates will be required to work in either English or French.
Technical Specialist Scholarship
- At least a bachelor's degree in a technical or scientific field.
- Proven experience in the industry or as a researcher.
- High level of language proficiency in English and a second language.
- Applications are accepted from native speakers of Arabic, Chinese, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
