The Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES) Office of Environmental Quality (ENV) of the US Department of State (DOS) will fund a project for the "Air Quality Management Community of Practice in Africa" programme.
This project should build a regional community of experts, decision-makers, community groups, the private sector, and other professionals and stakeholders in air quality. The community will create knowledge and develop best practices for:
- improving air quality monitoring, modelling, forecasting and data management;
- raise awareness and understanding of air quality issues;
- develop and implement air quality management structures and clean air solutions at all scales
Objectives - the project should aim to achieve the following objectives:
Objective 1: Create a community of practice to move forward with action and fill the gaps in the region's air quality management capacity.
The community must:
- connect relevant air quality experts, professionals and stakeholders with each other and with available resources;
- facilitate regular meetings between members of the community;
- Offer structures and activities that enable collective learning, relationship-building and problem-solving.
Objective 2: Increase air quality monitoring capacity, improve data management and implement development applications (e.g. modelling, forecasting, communication, and other decision support tools) in at least two countries eligible for funding
Objective 3: Develop, support and implement air quality management frameworks and clean air solutions (e.g. air quality management plans and regulatory frameworks) at all scales (i.e. regional, national and sub-national levels), including public awareness raising to improve accountability.

The project will focus on at least four of the following countries: Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Oman, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Eligibility Criteria:
OES accepts applications from US-based non-profit/non-governmental organisations subject to section 501(c) (3) of the US tax code; foreign-based non-profit/non-governmental organisations (NGOs); Public International Organisations; Foreign Public Organisations; Private, public or state institutions of higher education.
