Knight-Wallace Fellowships offer talented journalists two rare commodities: time and resources. Journalists eager for growth and deeply committed to the future of journalism spend an academic year at the University of Michigan to access the resources of a world-class university and immerse themselves in a journalism project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Areas of focus can include, but are not limited to, honing professional skills, tackling a challenge faced by your newsroom, researching data and surveys for a long-term reporting project or developing a journalistic venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brotherhood<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They select up to 20 fellows from all facets of journalism who are ready to take the next step in their careers and join them in Ann Arbor for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Eight-month programme,&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>from the end of August to April, from<\/strong>&nbsp;long immersive study of daily deadlines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Individual projects<\/strong>&nbsp;journalism courses designed to develop topical depth, gain new skills, tackle a writing challenge or explore a journalism venture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Specialised resources and access to teaching staff<\/strong>&nbsp;from the University of Michigan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Private seminars<\/strong>&nbsp;with editorial leaders, change agents and world-renowned experts for frank, off-the-record conversations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Workshops<\/strong>&nbsp;to improve professional skills and leadership abilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>US$ bag&nbsp;<strong>85,000 plus US$ 5,000<\/strong>&nbsp;for relocation expenses distributed monthly from August to April for living expenses (health insurance costs, auditing courses and participation in compulsory workshops and scholarship activities paid for by Wallace House)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Individual support for&nbsp;<strong>relocation<\/strong>&nbsp;and assistance in finding and securing housing to meet the housing needs of each scholar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spouses and partners<\/strong>&nbsp;are invited to participate in scholarship activities and university auditorium courses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Qualified candidates should have a minimum of five years' experience and be currently working in some aspect of journalism for a news organisation or as an independent journalist. They are looking for a diverse range of journalists, including reporters, editors, data specialists, visual journalists, audio producers, engagement specialists, designers, developers, entrepreneurs and organisational change agents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you're not a full-time journalist, most of your work should be in journalism. They don't consider full-time academics, PR writers, in-house trade writers, lobbyists, public advocates or those pursuing a degree.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are a US citizen, apply as a US candidate, even if you work in another country or for a non-US news organisation. If you are not a US citizen, apply as an international candidate, even if you work in the United States or for an American news organisation. A green card is not the same as citizenship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Application<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The deadline for international applicants (journalists without a US passport) to apply for the 2024-2025 academic year is 1 December 2023.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The deadline for US candidates to apply for the 2024-2025 academic year is 1 February 2024.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Scholarship offers are extended at the beginning of May, giving scholars enough time to plan a move to Ann Arbor at the beginning of the autumn semester.
