This prestigious fellowship, for which applications are now open, offers successful candidates the resources, support and guidance needed to develop and produce innovative, high-quality documentary projects. It is an initiative that not only boosts individual careers but also contributes to the enrichment of the global audiovisual landscape.

UC Berkeley, one of the world’s most renowned universities, in partnership with the Mycoskie Foundation, is seeking filmmakers who demonstrate exceptional creative vision, a commitment to authentic storytelling and a genuine desire to address relevant social, cultural or scientific issues. This year, the programme places a special focus on psychedelic documentaries, paving the way to explore topics such as therapeutic research, traditional use, and the social and political implications of these substances. For Cape Verdean filmmakers, this could be an opportunity to bring unique perspectives to the fore, given the archipelago’s rich cultural traditions and emerging discussions on mental health.

The programme is not just about funding; it is a journey involving mentoring, workshops and networking with experienced industry professionals. Scholarship recipients will have access to a network of renowned mentors, who will guide them through every stage of the production process, from script research and development to post-production and distribution. This collaborative and stimulating environment is ideal for honing skills, refining ideas and transforming concepts into powerful cinematic works. Furthermore, the association with an institution such as UC Berkeley lends invaluable credibility to the projects developed, opening doors to international festivals and major distribution platforms.

For filmmakers from Cape Verde, this is an opportunity to bring their stories and perspectives to the global stage. Cape Verdean culture is rich in stories that deserve to be told, and this grant provides the means to do so with excellence and impact. We strongly encourage all emerging and established talents to explore this opportunity and submit their proposals.

The deadline for submitting applications is 5 October 2026.
Further information and the application form can be found at: https://fellowships.journalism.berkeley.edu/mycoskie/

Get ready to turn your creative vision into reality with the Mycoskie Documentary Fellowship – an incredible opportunity for ambitious filmmakers!
