We present Cape Verde\u2019s application to the Pursuit Awards 2026 for PhD students and recent PhD graduates<\/strong>, an exceptional opportunity to boost scientific research and innovation across the archipelago. We believe that the participation of young Cape Verdean talent in this prestigious international competition will not only strengthen the country\u2019s research capacity, but will also contribute to raising the global profile of the knowledge generated in Cape Verde. This initiative is in line with the strategic vision for sustainable development, which places education and science at the heart of social and economic transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cape Verde has been demonstrating a growing commitment to training senior staff, with an increasing number of students going on to obtain a PhD in various fields of study. However, the transition from academia to the labour market, or the establishment of research careers, presents significant challenges. The Pursuit Awards provide an ideal platform for these young researchers to present their projects, gain international recognition and access collaborative networks that are crucial to their professional development and the impact of their research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our proposal aims to support the identification, preparation and application of a selected group of Cape Verdean PhD students and recent PhD graduates, ensuring that their research projects stand out for their originality, relevance and potential impact. Priority will be given to areas of research that address pressing challenges for the country\u2019s development, such as climate change, public health, renewable energy, the blue economy and digitalisation. A focus on diversity across disciplines and interdisciplinarity will be a key factor in the success of this initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The support infrastructure for applicants will include workshops on scientific writing and proposal preparation, mentoring sessions with senior researchers, and logistical support for the submission of applications. The aim is to create an environment that fosters excellence and enables participants to compete on an equal footing with their peers from around the world. A Cape Verdean researcher winning a Pursuit Award would be a historic milestone, which would inspire new generations and validate the collective effort in support of science and innovation in Cape Verde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deadline for submitting entries for the 2026 Pursuit Awards is 25 September 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
