Applications Now Open for the 2026 Whitley Awards: An Opportunity for Conservation Leaders in Cape Verde<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Whitley Awards, affectionately known as the \u2018Green Oscars\u2019, have announced that applications are now open for the 2026 edition, offering significant funding and international recognition to conservation leaders in developing countries. This is an unmissable opportunity for dedicated conservationists in Cape Verde, who fight crucial battles every day to protect the archipelago\u2019s rich but vulnerable biodiversity. The Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) is seeking passionate and innovative individuals who are implementing effective and sustainable solutions to the most pressing environmental challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Cape Verde, an island nation with unique ecosystems and high rates of endemism, conservation is vital not only for nature but also for the well-being of its communities. From the protection of sea turtles and migratory birds to the sustainable management of marine and terrestrial resources, conservation leaders in Cape Verde face complex challenges that require creativity, resilience and financial support. The Whitley Awards could be the catalyst needed to expand existing projects, launch new initiatives or consolidate the impact of long-running programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The application process, whilst rigorous, is designed to identify the most promising projects and the leaders with the greatest potential for impact. Applicants must demonstrate an in-depth understanding of their local context, a sound scientific approach to their conservation methods, and a strong commitment to local communities. The WFN values projects that are replicable, scalable and that contribute to local capacity building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to funding, which can be as much as \u00a340,000 (approximately 47,000 euros), the winners receive training in communication, access to a global network of conservation experts and a platform to raise the profile of their work. This exposure can open doors to future partnerships and investment, considerably expanding the reach and effectiveness of conservation initiatives in Cape Verde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deadline for submitting applications is 18 September 2026. We strongly encourage all conservation leaders in Cape Verde to explore this opportunity and submit their projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
