Urgent!

Cape Verdean Biodiversity in Focus: An Invitation to Sustainable Development

Cape Verde's natural wealth, with its unique biodiversity and geological features, is a fundamental asset for the archipelago's sustainable development. The islands, with their fragile and endemic ecosystems, face specific challenges in the face of climate change, population pressure, and uncontrolled tourism. Understanding and effectively managing biodiversity is therefore crucial to ensuring the economic and environmental future of Cape Verde, driving growth that respects the country's natural and cultural heritage.

The “Biodiversity Information for Development 2025: Africa” initiative emerges as an opportunity for Cape Verde to consolidate its leadership position in environmental conservation and the promotion of sustainable practices. This program aims to finance innovative projects that focus on the collection, analysis, and dissemination of relevant information on Cape Verdean biodiversity. The objective is to strengthen the country's capacity to make informed decisions, based on scientific data, for the conservation and sustainable use of its natural resources.

The proposals to be submitted should address, among other areas, biodiversity monitoring and mapping, environmental impact assessment of economic activities, threat and opportunity analysis, and the development of effective conservation strategies. It is crucial that projects integrate a holistic approach, considering the interdependence between different ecosystems and the importance of local community involvement. Active public participation, through environmental education programs and involvement in conservation activities, is a key factor for the long-term success of the proposed initiatives.

There are several priority areas of action for Cape Verde. These include the protection of sea turtles, the conservation of endemic birds, the sustainable management of marine resources, research and control of invasive species, and the promotion of responsible ecotourism. Proposals that demonstrate a clear link to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, namely SDGs 14 (Life Below Water) and 15 (Life on Land), will be particularly valued.

To maximize the impact of actions, it is important that proposals include effective mechanisms for disseminating results. These may include the publication of scientific reports, the creation of publicly accessible databases, the holding of workshops and seminars, and the use of online communication platforms to publicize findings. Collaboration between different institutions, including universities, research centers, non-governmental organizations, and the Cape Verdean government, is fundamental to ensuring the effectiveness and sustainability of the projects.

The evaluation of proposals will be carried out by a panel of experts, taking into account criteria such as the quality of the proposal, its relevance to the program's objectives, the capacity of the proposing team, the potential impact, and the sustainability of the proposed actions. Funding will be disbursed in phases, based on project performance and the submission of progress reports.

In short, this is a unique opportunity for Cape Verde to demonstrate its commitment to biodiversity conservation and to drive truly sustainable economic development. By investing in research, education, and the effective management of its natural resources, Cape Verde can ensure a prosperous and resilient future for generations to come.

Deadline for submitting proposals: November 3, 2025.

For more information and to submit your application, visit: https://gbif.fluxx.io/user_sessions/new

Discover how Cape Verde's biodiversity is an essential treasure for the islands' sustainable future!
