Applications are now open for the MIASA Writing Workshop on Governance, Democracy and Green Energy 2024 . The Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) seeks to provide early career researchers based in Africa working on the themes of governance, democracy and green energy on the continent with the space and intellectual community to turn a draft paper into a publishable journal article.
The 5-day programme will be organised as a writing retreat, with daily seminars and writing sessions. The seminars will include practical guidance on academic writing and publishing in high-quality journals. The daily writing sessions will be supported by academic mentors and editors with research interests in governance, democracy and green energy.

The objectives of the workshop are:
- To strengthen the academic writing skills of early-career African academics, with a special focus on female academics,
- To increase the success rate of submissions from early-career African academics to high-quality journals,
- Build a network of African-based academics working on the themes of governance, democracy and green energy.
Financing
- Successful candidates will receive funding to cover travel expenses from sub-Saharan Africa to Ghana, along with accommodation and subsistence costs during the workshop.

- A PhD awarded within 5 years of the application deadline, i.e. PhD certificate awarded after January 2019 to date;
- Employed at a recognised university or research institute in sub-Saharan Africa;
- Fluency in written and spoken English (there will be no translation services).
Selection criteria
Applications will be assessed and selected using a strictly merit-based procedure. The main selection criteria are:
- A doctoral certificate awarded between January 2019 and January 2024
- Employment at a university or research institute on the African continent
- Excellence, relevance and originality of the draft research article
- Adequacy of the research with the themes of governance, democracy and green energy
Application
The application must include the following:
- a letter of motivation (maximum 1 page) describing the reasons why you want to take part in the writing workshop and the benefits to be gained,
- a draft research article (5,000-8,000 words in English) containing original data and preliminary analyses of data in the areas of governance, democracy and green energy, and intended for submission to journals,
- a summary of the article (max. 500 words),
- a complete CV,
- a doctoral award certificate,
