The Working Group on African Political Economy (WGAPE) is pleased to announce a Small Grants Programme for junior African researchers to explore a question of interest in African political economy.
Funding can be used to support investigators' time, research assistance, research or other data collection costs, data purchase or storage, travel and other reasonable research expenses. Indirect costs are not allowed for these grants.
They invite submissions that reflect WGAPE's broad research agenda on the political economy of African development, including ethnic politics, civil conflict and violence, decentralisation and democratisation, corruption, local governance, public economics and other related topics. Successful proposals will include both a quantitative and empirical component. Purely theoretical or qualitative research will not be funded by this RFP; however, mixed-methods research projects will be accepted.
Financing information
*Individual projects can apply for funding of up to US$ 17,500.
*Successful candidates will receive between US$ 6,000 and US$ 9,000.
Eligibility criteria
*Eligibility is restricted to African junior scholars, pre-doctoral students, in a doctoral programme or within five years of receiving their doctorate. This refers to individuals who (a) are currently studying at a university or research institute in Africa, and/or (b) are currently teaching at an African university or research institute.
Observation
*Junior African scholars collaborating with scholars based outside Africa are eligible to apply for this grant; however, if awarded, funds will be transferred directly to the African-based applicant. Given that the aim of the programme is to support junior African scholars, collaborations with non-African researchers will receive additional scrutiny.
*Unaffiliated researchers (i.e. those who do not study, teach or carry out research at a university, international institution, centre or government department) are not eligible to apply.
