The Liveability Challenge is a global platform that seeks out and accelerates the launch of innovative solutions to 21st century urban challenges in cities across the tropics. The Challenge is Asia's largest award for sustainability solutions and one of the main highlights in Singapore's sustainability events calendar.
With five editions successfully completed, Eco-Business will team up with the Temasek Foundation and its vast ecosystem of partners to deliver the seventh edition in 2024 to accelerate urban transformation and generate significant impact.
1. CLIMATE CHANGE
They are looking for disruptive innovations that can capture and utilise carbon at scale to create products for the global market and innovations that generate cost-effective renewable energy. We are also looking for adaptive solutions that strengthen and protect our ecosystems, societies and infrastructures from the effects of climate change.
With the accelerating impacts of climate change around the world, there is an urgent need for measures mitigation e adaptation to ensure prosperous and liveable environments for our growing populations. As we continue to decarbonise and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we also need to focus on strengthening the resilience of our ecosystems and society in general against the current and future impacts of climate change.

TLC is seeking to develop its efforts to enable solutions that eliminate carbon emissions at scaleincluding revolutionary carbon capture, utilisation and storage technology; and low-carbon solutions for energy, urban infrastructure, transport and logistics. TLC is also looking for adaptive innovationsincluding nature-based solutionsIn addition, there are a number of other organisations dealing with the effects of climate change, such as extreme weather and rising sea levels.
They are looking for solutions that:
- Capturing and effectively converting carbon emissions into useful products (e.g. building materials, recovery sand or synthetic fuels)
- Generate profitable energy from renewable sources (e.g. hydrogen, wind and tidal power)
- Significantly reduce carbon emissions produced by industries and buildings (e.g. refrigeration systems)
- Drastically reduce the negative impact of climate change (e.g. mitigate extreme heat, urban heat island effect)
- Builds climate-resilient communities for at-risk groups (e.g. mangrove restoration along coastal communities to combat rising sea levels) through sustainable and replicable business models
Other considerations. Solutions must:
- Be carbon negative in the overall life cycle and have zero/minimal externalities
- Be technology-based (e.g. physics, chemistry); or nature-based solutions (e.g. community models)
- Be commercially viable and scalable
- Conduct the pilot in Singapore (for technology-based solutions) or South-East Asia (for nature-based solutions)
2. FOOD and NUTRITION
We are looking for solutions that create urban and circular food production systems in the space of agriculture, aquaculture and alternative nutrition. We are looking for breakthrough innovations that maximise production efficiency while minimising resource requirements to improve key nutrition for today's changing demographics.
Food resilience is a critical pillar in the world's ability to sustainably feed our growing populations. With increasing restrictions on land, water and energy, along with climate change and disruptions to the global supply chain, there is a growing need for countries around the world to increase their food resilience to ensure reliable and affordable access to food supplies in the face of unexpected challenges and disruptions.

They are looking for solutions that:
- Providing advances in maximising production yields, while minimising resource requirements and waste (e.g. lower energy consumption, minimal carbon emissions), in at least one or a combination of these critical areas for food resilience: agriculture, aquaculture and alternative nutrition
- Make progress in extended service life of perishable food without compromising food safety
- Producing food with better quality of essential nutrients without compromising on flavour and texture
Other considerations. Solutions must:
- Be commercially viable and scalable in a dense urban environment
- Driving the pilot in Singapore
PRIZES
The finalists will present their solutions to a panel of investors at the Grand Final for the chance to secure the grand prize of S$ 1 million in project funding from the Temasek Foundation for each track.
Although teams can be based anywhere in the world, the proposed project must be applicable to Singapore or Southeast Asia (for nature-based solutions).
