The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship promotes educational access and opportunity while increasing international diversity. The AU EGL scholarship covers all UA billable expenses (full tuition, room and board) for an international student who will need a non-immigrant visa (preferably a F-1 or J-1 student visa) to study in the United States. The scholarship no covers non-billable expenses such as compulsory health insurance, books, airline tickets, taxes and miscellaneous expenses (approximately US$ 4,000 per year).

The AU EGL scholarship is renewable for a total of four years of undergraduate study, based on continuous satisfactory academic performance. Students interested in all courses offered at the AU are eligible to apply.

ImportantOnly a The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is available for autumn 2024. If you are not selected as an AU EGL 2024 recipient and wish to continue the application process, you may be eligible for partial merit scholarships. However, you will need to submit proof of additional funds beyond the initial US$ 4,000 you provided. The estimated costs for the 2024-2025 academic year are US$ 78,296.

You are NOT eligible to apply if:

  • You are a US citizen, US permanent resident, pending US permanent resident or dual citizen of the US and another country.
  • You are enrolled or have already started any post-secondary study at another university in your home country or in the United States.
  • You finished secondary school before 2022.

AU EGLS applicants must apply for Regular Decision for Autumn (August) 2024. Do not apply Early Decision (ED).

Preference will be given to:

  1. International students who have overcome various obstacles and challenges, as well as those from diverse and under-represented global and socio-economic backgrounds.
  2. A minimum 3.8 GPA equivalent to a 4.0 GPA (or in the top 10% of the graduating class) for grades 9 to 12.
  3. A demonstrated commitment to leadership, volunteering, community service and advancing the needs of people in their home country.
  4. Students with a of the following options:
    1. 95+ TOEFL iBT (all sub-scores must be 20 or higher)
    2. Paper-based TOEFL sub-scores of 24+ (Taken after 31 May 2017)
    3. 7.0+ IELTS (all sub-scores must be 6.0 or higher)
    4. 33 minimum SAT Reading score
    5. 29 minimum ACT English
    6. 65 PTE minimum
    7. 125+ Duolingo (all sub-scores must be 115 or higher)
    8. Cambridge Assessment English score of 185 or higher. Each sub-score must be 169 or above.
  5. Students still enrolled in secondary school and finishing by June 2024.
  6. Important: Students in the IB system should plan to graduate with a full IB diploma with at least 3 HL subjects. Students studying in the British A-Levels system must complete at least 3 A-levels and finish 13 years of study before August 2024.

Very important: The AU EGLS selection process is the most competitive. Priority consideration will be given to AU EGLS applicants who apply and complete the AU EGLS application process, Common Application and submission of international admission documents, including proof of English proficiency and bank letter confirming US$ 4,000 minimum, by 15 December 2023.

Instructions

Note: The application process has closed for first-year students applying for autumn 2023. Please check back in mid-September for information on the EGLS 2024 application.

  1. Fill in the AU EGLS online application form; registration will be available on 15 September 2023.
  2. Submit a bank letter and the AU Certification of Finances (AU CFIS) form - each showing a minimum of US$ 4,000. These can be uploaded via your Future Eagle Portal or faxed to +1-202-885-1025. Examples of bank letters and the AU CFIS form template
  3. Submit your official TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English, PTE or Cambridge Assessment English Test score results by 15 December 2023 at the latest. Have official English proficiency score reports sent directly by the testing agency to American University, Undergraduate Admissions, Washington, District of Columbia. Note: Students cannot send their own scores.
  4. Fill in and submit the Joint Application or the Coalition Application, together with all the supporting documents by checklist, by the AU EGLS priority deadline of 15 December 2023 or 15 January 2024 at the latest. Please note that the preliminary AU EGLS application pack must include a bank letter confirming a minimum of US$ 4.000 (not US$ 78.296). Students who do not submit a complete application pack with all supporting documents by the deadline will not be reviewed.
  5. If you are applying through a programme supported by EducationUSA or if you are a former FLEX or YES high school scholar from the US Department of State, please provide a letter from your centre's advisor. EducationUSA confirming your application. You can request that the letter be sent to levinson@american.edu as a PDF.
  6. If you are not selected as one of the finalists, you may still be considered for admission to American University, Washington, DC and eligible for partial merit scholarships. However, to continue the application process, you will need to submit proof of funds totalling US$ 78,296 (estimated costs for the first year of study).
