Deadline: 15th February 2024
Registration for the STIAS Iso Lomso 2024 abolsa is now open. Iso Lomso means "the eye of tomorrow" in isiXhosa: looking to the future, laying the foundations for tomorrow. The programme is aimed at African academics who have obtained a doctoral degree within the last seven years and who hold an academic post at a university or research institution anywhere in Africa.
Iso Lomso fellowships provide a three-year link with STIAS to allow fellows to develop and conduct a long-term research programme of their choice. The aim is to facilitate and support them in becoming established in their field.

The main means of support are the STIAS residencies. The residency periods will be mutually agreed between the scholar, their home institution and STIAS, and can vary between six weeks and five months per residency. A first period of residence will normally be of a longer duration to be resumed during 2025, followed by two more residencies until 2027.
Benefits
Whilst in residence, the fellows receive regular support from STIAS which includes:
- a return flight in economy class;
- comfortable amenities within walking distance of the institute;
- individual offices equipped with a computer, telephone and printer;
- a monthly stipend for daily living costs;
- access to the Stellenbosch University library (including electronic resources) and high-speed internet connection;
- participation in the regular STIAS fellows programme, including daily lunch, weekly fellows seminars, STIAS public lectures and social events;
- a childcare allowance for grant holders who are accompanied by young children while they are in residence.
