Deadline: 15 November 2023

Applications are now open for the Meta Llama Impact Grants 2023 Programme . Recent advances in AI, and generative AI in particular, have captured the public's imagination and demonstrated what those who develop these technologies have known for a long time - they have the potential to help people do amazing things, create a new era of economic and social opportunity and give individuals, creators and organisations new ways to express themselves and connect with people.

Building on an open source legacy of its products and tools to benefit the global community, last July Meta launched Llama 2 as the next generation of its large open source language model. Since its release, hundreds of thousands of download requests have signalled the importance of Llama 2 to the global developer community.

With open source being part of its DNA, Meta wants to expand this opportunity to even more organisations around the world. That's why they're launching the Llama Impact Grants programme. The aim of the programme is to identify and support the most attractive applications of Llama 2 for social benefit.

They recognise that global challenges are complex and full of nuances. That's why they are structuring this programme around three different strands:

  • Academic background
  • Environment
  • Open innovation

Eligibility

  • If your lab or organisation has ideas on how to address any of the above or other critical global challenges by leveraging Llama 2, we welcome your proposal!
  • Applicants submitting proposals under the Education strand are encouraged to consider how Llama 2 could promote the discovery of new opportunities to deliver more equitable educational outcomes in their own communities. This may include (but is not limited to) the following:
    • Support for students:  Provide personalised content for individual students in order to convey key points in the way they best understand. This can include personalised curriculum materials, course programmes and assessment questions that focus on areas where a child most needs support.
    • Support for teachers:  Assist with assessment, lesson planning and other administrative tasks to enable teachers to spend more time teaching and supporting their students, creating a more productive teaching workforce.
  • Applicants submitting proposals under Environment are encouraged to consider how Llama 2 can be incorporated as a component of a solution to build a healthier and more sustainable world, including (but not limited to) the following:
    • Focus on mitigation:  Help us accelerate the discovery, testing and scaling of new methods to reduce greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere. Applications include accelerating materials science, carbon removal, NDC strategies and just transitions.
    • Focus on Adaptation:  Help us adapt to a changing environment, saving lives and protecting livelihoods. Applications include agricultural planning and management; urban resilience; and green economic development.
  • Congratulations to all the proposals that take an innovative approach to utilising llama 2 for social good, including (but not limited to) the following:
    • Faster synthesis and responses from large research corpuses, policy documents or data sets, including the derivation of new insights from unstructured texts.
    • Improving the transfer speed of new software applications that help us understand and act quickly in a changing world.
    • Summarise known side effects and anecdotal results of medications to mitigate negative interactions and propose solutions to increase medication adherence.
    • Analysing court records and documents to identify evidentiary biases and challenges that could reopen cases and bring about fairer judicial outcomes.

Evaluation criteria

All proposals will be assessed using the selection criteria we have evaluated:

  • Technical feasibility: The llama is a central part of the proposed solution. There is a clear indication of how the llama will be used and it is feasible given the model's capabilities.
  • Applicability: A solution proposal measurably addresses the challenge outlined in its designated track. The solution proposal can be new disciplines or refined through the use of Llama.
  • Responsibility: Where applicable, the proposal articulates how it will address responsible practices in relation to data security, privacy and replicability.
  • Impact:  The proposed solution articulates a vision of how your solution impacts the wider problem space and delivers social benefits. This could include how the solution works in different geographical regions, addresses the needs of additional communities or something similar.

Application

The deadline for applications is 15 November 2023. The teams whose proposals are selected as finalists will be notified in January 2024.
