The Global Human Development (GHD) Programme at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service is thrilled to announce at least one full scholarship and several partial scholarships for GHD students from sub-Saharan Africa, made possible thanks to the generous support of the Amre and Caroline Heinz-Youness Family and the William and Catherine McGurn Family.
Georgetown University's Global Human Development Programme is a two-year, full-time master's degree that encompasses an innovative competency-based curriculum with embedded experiential learning opportunities. The curriculum covers core courses including development economics, international political economy, programme design and implementation, monitoring and evaluation, quantitative and qualitative methodologies, finance and budgeting, and management.
About Georgetown University
The aim of the Global Human Development Programme is to prepare students - through courses, internships, extracurricular activity and practical fieldwork - to understand the challenges of international development and provide them with the tools to face these challenges as successful professionals. Experts and experienced development professionals today confirm that the field of international development requires professionals with strong analytical skills, specialised knowledge in particular areas of development, and relevant competencies that come from direct practical experience.
Purpose and Benefits of Georgetown University Master's Scholarships
A full scholarship for a GHD student from sub-Saharan Africa.
In addition to the curriculum, students apply the skills and knowledge they learn in the classroom to three different professional work experiences:
- The summer field project (a fully-funded 2-3 month international work placement);
- an internship in a relevant international development organisation/agency based in Washington, DC for at least one academic semester;
- the capstone project (a two-semester client involvement project that emphasises project management and analysis).
Eligibility Requirements for Georgetown University Master's Scholarships
The GHD is a practitioner-centred programme, so one year's experience working in international development is required, and a minimum of two years' professional experience is preferable. All applicants must have completed a degree prior to the proposed enrolment.
Candidates for the Global Human Development Programme must meet the following requirements:
- A bachelor's degree.
- Completion of introductory courses in macro and microeconomics and statistics (must be completed before enrolment in August, not necessarily before application).
- Ability to function effectively in English and another language (students must pass an oral proficiency exam before graduation, implying that they will have a reasonable command of a foreign language before entering the programme).
- Several years of experience living, studying and working abroad is strongly recommended.
- Completion of the GRE (preferred) or GMAT exam, taken in time to submit the scores by the application deadline.
