Applications are now open for the United Nations Young Champions for Disarmament Training Programme 2023 . United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has made a major push to involve and empower young people, recognising their participation as essential to identifying new solutions that will ensure the breakthroughs our world urgently needs.

To this end, the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), with the generous financial support of the Government of Germany, is calling on young people to apply for the 2nd edition of the United Nations Young Champions for Disarmament Training Programme - an innovative apprenticeship. programme that aims to empower young people to work for disarmament in their communities.

Programme details

Fifteen young people will be selected to participate in the 2nd edition of the training programme, which will take a regional approach. Through this regional approach, the training programme will bring together a geographically diverse group of young disarmament advocates and allow them to share their specific regional perspectives - from Africa and Europe; Asia and the Pacific; the Americas and Caribbean regions - and connect them to the global disarmament discourse. In addition, three job opportunities at GNUAD for young professionals are included in the training programme to support its implementation at regional level. These positions will be publicised in due course.

The 15 selected UN Youth Champions for Disarmament will receive training in the general principles of disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control and their links to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. After completing the introductory courses, UNODA will facilitate regular exchanges with experts from think tanks, civil society organisations and the diplomatic field, followed by regional workshops and youth forums. At the end of the training, the 15 Young Champions will be invited to present their perspectives at an event at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be aged 18 or over and 24 or under at the time of the application deadline to be eligible for the training programme.
  • Are you interested in taking part in an innovative learning programme to improve your ability to defend peace, disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control in your community?
  • You want the opportunity to take part in a face-to-face regional workshop, as well as travelling to the United Nations headquarters in New York.
