Registration is now open for the International Water Association (IWA) Smart Utilities for Climate Recognition Programme 2024 This program aims to inspire utility companies to become increasingly climate-smart and to embrace the cultural shift necessary for a water-smart future. The recognition program is based on the IWA Climate Smart Utilities Vision and is structured around three interconnected pillars:
- Adaptation: Improving resilience to adapt to climate change.
- Mitigation: Assessing and aiming to reduce GHG emissions.
- Leadership: Leading and inspiring others to take climate-smart action for a water-smart future.
This year's edition will assess utilities in two main categories. The first is the 'Entrepreneur' category, which will focus on utilities that have already made substantial progress on their Climate Smart journey (across all three interconnected pillars of Adaptation, Mitigation, and Leadership) and will therefore be assessed on a more detailed basis. The second is the 'Participant' category, which will target utilities that have prioritized the climate agenda and begun their Climate Smart journey (covering at least one of the three interconnected pillars of Adaptation, Mitigation, and Leadership) and will therefore be assessed through overall narrative evaluations of their climate actions.

Benefits
- An attractive financial incentive package covering flight expenses, conference registration fees, and accommodation in Toronto will be provided to six representatives in total, from each of the top three utility companies in the Achiever category, and each of the top three utility companies from low-, lower-middle-, and upper-middle-income countries in the Participant category.
Eligibility
- Water and sanitation companies worldwide are invited to apply.
- Dealerships can only register in one category.
Application
The inaugural edition of the Recognition Program was launched in 2022 at the IWA WWCE in Copenhagen, Denmark. The second edition took place during the IWA WDCE 2023 in Kigali, Rwanda. In 2024, the third edition will take place at the IWA WWCE in Toronto, Canada, from August 11-15, 2024.
