Registration for the UN Youth Leadership Programme in Food Systems 2024 are now open. Sign up for a new and inspiring programme for early career professionals to accelerate food systems solutions in the Global South.

Selected participants will be invited to take part in a 5-day face-to-face leadership-building workshop. The mission is to facilitate connections between promising early-career innovators, professionals, scientists and activists from low- and middle-income countries. Together, they will connect policy advocacy with grassroots action to collectively shape a positive food future.

  • Learn how:  take part in a 5-day co-creative workshop, bridging the gap between data, knowledge and implementation. Explore modules such as negotiations, policy advocacy, strategic communication and evidence-based decision-making.
  • Inhale-  Get involved: immerse yourself in presentations by experienced professionals, scientists, young global food champions and influencers who are shaping the future of food systems.
  • Act:  Co-create a community of practice, hone your leadership skills and develop transformative initiatives for low- and middle-income countries to transform their food systems. 

Programme content

Enhance your experience at:

  • Governance systems:  Negotiations and the design of multi-actor processes for the governance of food systems.
  • Defence of policies : Master leadership skills for policy advocacy, bridging the gap between global and local and vice versa. Learn how to effectively direct political processes at local, regional and global levels.
  • Communication and storytelling to make an impact : Developing impactful communication and storytelling strategies, raising awareness and securing funds for your initiatives.
  • Science and evidence-based decision-making:  Building proposals and establishing partnerships based on scientific evidence.

Financing

  • For candidates selected for sponsorship, the Centre will give priority to as many countries as possible with the aim of supporting at least one candidate per country. Sponsorship will include full coverage of travel, accommodation and meals during the training.
  • Self-funded participants are responsible for covering their travel, accommodation and additional expenses. There is no workshop participation fee.
  • All participants, whether sponsored or self-funded, will receive an invitation letter and, if necessary, a visa support letter to assist with the necessary travel documentation. On completion of the workshop, all participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

  • The programme is aimed at early career professionals from all disciplinary areas who are interested in leading food systems solutions in three regions: Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and the Pacific. If you are already involved in food systems activities as a researcher, member of civil society or in other roles, this programme is for you!
  • Applicants must be aged between 18 and 35 (no older than 35 in December 2023);
  • Citizens from low- and middle-income countries (according to the  World Bank classification );
  • Proficiency in English is desirable. Interpreting services will be organised on the basis of individual needs and availability.

Selection criteria

Selection will take place in one phase. Each application will be assessed by a selection committee convened by the UN Food Systems Coordination Centre, the FAO Regional Offices and other regional partners.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following:

  • Current work: priority will be given to candidates for national administrations and other public agencies related to the transformation of food systems. 
  • Academic and/or professional excellence - in the field of food and agriculture and interdisciplinary training
  • Policy advocacy/communication skills and leadership experience
  • Quality of the motivation and project presented at the end of the course
  • Experience in political processes or grassroots initiatives at local, regional or global level
  • Personal commitment: quality of the statement of commitment to serve society and support sustainable development
  • History of involvement in advocacy networks, youth associations or similar organisations working to transform food systems
  • Understanding the UNFSS Summit, National Pathways, etc.

The selection committee will consider gender, geographical and multidisciplinary backgrounds.
