Registration is now open for the GI-TOC 2024 Training and Mentoring Program As part of a program supported by the U.S. Department of State, the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) is coordinating a capacity-building program with a group of investigative journalists in Mauritania, Cape Verde, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, and Senegal. The United States is committed to combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUU fishing) and illegal trafficking.

Strengthening the capacities of West African journalists is a vital step in the fight against transnational organized crime (TOC) and illicit trafficking. GI-TOC has been a long-standing partner and supporter of investigative journalism focused on organized crime worldwide, including in West Africa. GI-TOC is partnering with Poseidon and the Media and Communications Innovation Consortium (CMICS) in delivering this training.

The main objective of the capacity-building and mentoring program is to strengthen the capacities of West African investigative journalist networks working on transnational organized crime, specifically by developing their investigative skills and substantive knowledge about human trafficking, IUU and forestry crimes, and improving the impact of their reports on public awareness and policymaking related to COT in West Africa.

  • A virtual training session that provides the fundamental basis for the analysis of transnational organized crime;
  • A five-day in-person workshop in Dakar, between April 15 and 19, 2024. Sessions on IUU fishing, forestry crimes, human trafficking, and investigative journalism skills (including audiovisual skills) will be given by experts in the relevant fields;
  • The opportunity to apply for a six-month mentorship program, which includes a $3,000 USD grant and guidance from an expert in the relevant investigative story area, to develop an investigative journalism story focused on IUU fishing, forestry crimes, or human trafficking. Five journalists will be selected for this mentorship.
  • The opportunity to be part of a network of journalists who exchange information about IUU fishing, forest crimes, and human trafficking.

Eligibility

Between 20 and 25 journalists from the target countries (Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Mauritania, Cape Verde) will be selected to participate in the program.

To be eligible, journalists must:

  • to be based in one of the countries in focus;
  • have proven experience working closely with communities in that country;
  • have demonstrated experience and skills in investigative journalism (use of investigative techniques, etc.);
  • Have proven prior experience working on and publishing investigative journalism articles related to transnational organized crime;
  • I am available to participate in person in the workshop in Dakar between April 15 and 19.

It is desirable to report previous and proven experiences regarding IUU fishing, human trafficking and/or forest crimes.
