Applications are now open for the TWAS-TÜBİTAK Postgraduate Scholarship Programme 2023/2024 . The Türkiye Scientific and Technological Research Council (TÜBİTAK) and TWAS have established a scholarship programme for foreign academics from developing countries in the South who wish to pursue research for a doctorate in a field of natural and related applied sciences in departments and laboratories of public and private universities in Türkiye and TÜBİTAK Research Centres and Institutes.
The scholarships are sustainable in departments and laboratories of public and private universities in Turkey for a minimum period of 6 months to a maximum period of 12 months.
The fields eligible under the programme are as follows:
- Agricultural Sciences
- Cell Structure. & Molecular Biology
- Biological Systems and Organisms
- Health Sciences, including Neurosciences
- Chemical Sciences
- Engineering Sciences
- Astronomy, Space and Earth Sciences
- Mathematical Sciences
- Physics
- Computing and Information Technology.
Cost
- TWAS will be responsible for providing travel support to Turkey and from Turkey to the researchers' country of origin/residence and will also cover visa-related expenses.
- TÜBİTAK will be responsible for a monthly allowance to cover accommodation and living expenses and medical facilities for minor illnesses, as available in Turkey, in amounts to be specified by TÜBİTAK.
- Study fees, including tuition, enrolment and research costs, must be waived or covered by the host institutes.
Eligibility
- Be permanent residents and nationals of a developing country in the South.
- Applicants from countries lagging behind in science and technology (STLC) and women are especially encouraged to apply. For the list of STLC . Note. Developing countries that are not on the list can also apply.
- You must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residence in Turkey or any developed country;
- Candidates who are already in the host country (Turkey) are not eligible to apply for this scholarship;
- Hold a master's degree or equivalent in natural and related applied sciences (in one of the areas specified above);
- Be no more than 35 years old on 31 December of the year of application;
- By the closing date for applications, you must be enrolled in a doctoral programme in natural and related applied sciences (in the areas specified in the call text) at a higher education institution in your country of origin or in another developing country. You must have passed the doctoral qualifying examination or be at an advanced stage of your doctoral research in related natural and applied sciences (in the areas specified in the call text). Applicants must certify this criterion with an official Certificate of Registration and No Objection (see the example that can be downloaded below or from TÜBİTAK's online application site). This document must be issued no later than three months before the date of application, and should briefly mention the timetable and planned research work;
- Provide an official Letter of Acceptance from an eligible department, institution or laboratory of a public or private university in Turkey or TÜBİTAK Research Centres and Institutes.
- Note. Requests for acceptance should be directed to the chosen host institution(s) in Turkey, and NOT to TÜBİTAK. Without prior acceptance, the application will not be considered for selection. The letter of acceptance must be signed by the highest authority of the chosen host institute. The maximum number of academic advisors in Turkey can be 2 (two).
- Provide the research proposal form drawn up in the format determined by TÜBİTAK;
- Provide evidence of proficiency in English. If the medium of instruction is not English: provide evidence in English, e.g. standardised test card (TOEFL, IELTS etc.) or a letter issued by the university certifying knowledge of the language. If the medium of instruction is English, write a brief statement indicating what type of instruction was in English, e.g. high school, bachelor's or master's degree. This statement must be signed and dated by the applicant;
- Do not carry out any other duties during the period of your scholarship;
- Be financially responsible for any accompanying family members;
- Have not previously received or obtained a grant under this programme;
- You must return to your country of origin upon completion of the scholarship.
