The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) calls for young women and men under the age of 35 to apply for the Bags of Research to Young people of the Silk Routes 2023 to mobilise young researchers for a more in-depth study of the shared heritage of the Silk Routes.
The research needs to address specific questions related to:
- the shared heritage and plural identities developed along the Silk Routes,
- its internal diversity,
- its potential in contemporary societies for creativity, intercultural dialogue, social cohesion, regional and international cooperation, and
- ultimatelypeace and sustainable development.
The UNESCO Silk Road Youth Research Fellowship was launched for the first time in 2021 and is organised within the UNESCO Silk Road Programme with the support of the National Commission of the People's Republic of China. China for UNESCO, in the context of UNESCO's Social Sciences and Humanities Programme.

- Twelve grants of USD10,000 will be awarded per research project.
What areas of Silk Road research are eligible?
- A wide range of research fields, including multidisciplinary and multidimensional proposals not limited to a specific region or chronology, are eligible. The proposed research may cover one or several themes associated with the shared heritage of the Silk Routes, including but not limited to:
Eligibility Criteria
- Postgraduate researchers from all countries aged 35 or under at the time of application are eligible to apply for the grant.
- The proposed research can be carried out by an individual researcher or can be part of a group or collaborative project, however, only one grant will be awarded per research project.
