Deadline: 30 September 2023
Applications are now open for the KAS Sur-place Scholarship Programme in Ethiopia 2024. The KAS sur-place scholarship is a local scholarship offered by the KAS Ethiopia/African Union Office in the form of financial support to Ethiopians who are enrolled and pursuing postgraduate studies at universities in Ethiopia and who show excellence in their academic performance and in society.
The phrase "sur-place" is French and means "on the spot" or "in the place" and the scholarship has this name to signify that it is a scholarship offered to students in the place or location where they study, in this case Ethiopia.
Categories
There are two categories of scholarship. The "monthly academic scholarship" and the "training scholarship".
- The "monthly academic scholarship" supports students in Ethiopia who have completed their bachelor's degree and are currently enrolled in a master's programme or about to enrol in a master's programme. This scholarship consists of a monthly grant of 70 euros. It is not a full scholarship, but an incentive and recognition of excellent performance in academic studies and in society.
- The "training grantThe "training grant" is a one-off financial support and is aimed at young Ethiopian professionals who have completed their postgraduate studies (master's or doctorate) and who want to cover the cost/fees to take a short training course in Ethiopia to specialise and develop their professional skills, for example by taking a computer course or a project management course or a course on another subject more focused on their discipline. Candidates for the scholarship must apply once they have identified the course they wish to attend. When applying, they must provide a detailed 2-3 page proposal setting out the subject, duration and cost of the course they have identified, the institution offering it and how they intend to use the course for their professional development. Applications with insufficient information on these elements will not be considered. The training grant is not intended to cover tuition fees for full master's programmes. The amount of the grant will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
Benefits
- The KAS sur-place scholarship programme offers more than financial support. The KAS Office Ethiopia/UA endeavours to support the fellows in their academic activities and in advancing their careers. They will have access to KAS workshops, conferences, discussion forums and many other resources that KAS offers.
- You will learn about German and European history, discuss international relations, development issues and peace and security in Africa and Ethiopia.
Eligibility
- The KAS Ethiopia/UA Office can only support scholarship holders pursuing studies or training in Ethiopia ("sur-place"). The scholarship programme does not support students undertaking master's studies or further training abroad.
- The KAS sur-place scholarships in Ethiopia support young people who demonstrate excellence in their academic studies and in society.
- To be eligible for the "monthly academic scholarship", applicants must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher in their bachelor's degree (in all years of the bachelor's degree!).
- Students applying for the "training grant" must have an average of 3.5 or above in their master's degree and/or (if applicable) summa cum laude in their doctorate.
- They look for students who not only excel in their studies, but who are highly involved in civic engagement, as they fundamentally believe that countries can only grow if everyone contributes to the community.
Selection process
The selection process has two stages.
- The first stage is the pre-selection and shortlisting of the best candidates based on their application documents (grades, levels of civic engagement, etc.). On this basis, KAS will invite the best candidates to the second stage, the end of the selection week.
- The second stage is the selection of fellows during a weekend that takes place at the end of the year in Addis Ababa. The weekend consists of a written test that assesses the candidates' general knowledge of history, politics, national and international news and global issues. After the written test, each candidate must appear for a 45-minute interview before an interview panel. Although there is no predetermined number of fellows who will be selected each year, the 2022 and 2023 insignia comprised a total of 20 and 15 fellows respectively.
