Registration is now open for the Google PhD Fellowship Programme 2024 . Google's doctoral scholarships directly support postgraduate students in their doctoral studies, as well as connecting them with a Google research mentor. Cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with the academic community is one of Google's top priorities.

The Google PhD Fellowship Program was created to recognise outstanding graduate students conducting exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields. The fellowships support promising PhD candidates from all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Google's mission is to promote inclusive research communities and encourage people from diverse backgrounds to apply. Eligibility

All regions

  • Students must remain enrolled full-time on the doctoral programme for the duration of the scholarship or they will lose the award.
  • Google employees and their spouses, children and family members are not eligible.
  • Students who are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organisation funding is exempt.
  • Previous recipients of the doctoral scholarship programme cannot apply again.
  • For new doctoral students (Africa, India, Latin America and Southeast Asia),
    • The award of the scholarship does not mean admission to a doctoral programme. The awardee must apply separately and be accepted onto a PhD programme in computer science (or an adjacent field) at an eligible institution.
    • The award of the scholarship will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable at the institution where the scholar is enrolled in the doctoral programme.

Nominated students in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the United States, East Asia and Europe.

Universities should only nominate students who fulfil the following requirements:

  • Africa:  New PhD students are eligible to apply, but the scholarship award will depend on the recipient enrolling in a full-time PhD programme in computer science (or an adjacent field) within the year of the scholarship award, or the award will be forfeited.
  • Australia and New Zealand Early-stage students enrolled in the first or second year of their doctorate (no requirement to complete the postgraduate course by the year of the academic award).
  • Canada and the United States students who have completed the postgraduate course of their doctorate by the year of the academic award when the scholarship begins.
  • East Asia:  students who have completed most of the postgraduate courses in their doctorate by the academic award year when the scholarship begins. Students must have sufficient time for research projects after receiving a scholarship.
  • Europe:  Students enrolled at any stage of their doctorate can apply.

Direct candidate students in India, Latin America and Southeast Asia

  • New PhD students can apply, but the scholarship award will depend on the scholar enrolling in a full-time PhD programme in computer science (or adjacent field) within the academic award year of the scholarship, or the award will be forfeited.
    • Latin America students enrolled in their first or second year of doctoral studies (no requirement to complete the postgraduate course by the year of the academic award).
