Introduction

Are you a dedicated social change leader committed to fighting inequality? If so, the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity (AFSEE) Fellowship programme invites you to apply for its innovative and fully funded initiative based at the International Inequalities Institute of the London School of Economics and Political Science. This programme, currently in its eighth cohort, is designed for mid-career individuals with at least seven years' experience in addressing various aspects of social and economic inequality. It welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds, including policymakers, researchers, activists, practitioners, artists and movement builders from around the world.

AFSEE Fellowship: A Catalyst for Change

The AFSEE Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for change agents to pause, reflect and revitalise their efforts to combat social and economic inequalities. The programme provides a platform for participants:

  • Engage in in-depth learning and skills development.
  • Build a supportive community and valuable networks.
  • Strengthen your ability to create a lasting impact on society.

In the words of Professor Armine Ishkanian, AFSEE's Executive Director, the scholarship aims to empower social change leaders with the tools and knowledge they need to drive significant change in the future.

Areas of Expertise

The AFSEE Fellowship is open to individuals working in various fields related to social and economic equity. These fields include, but are not limited to:

  • Economic and social rights.
  • Sustainability and environmental activism.
  • Tax justice and economic alternatives.
  • The rights of women, minorities and people with disabilities.
  • Right to education.
  • Democracy and governance.
  • Housing and urban inequalities.
  • Labour rights.
  • Community organisation.
  • Art and culture.
  • Peace-building and transitional justice.

Two different tracks

The AFSEE Fellowship offers two tracks to accommodate the diverse needs and circumstances of candidates:

  1. Residential Track: Fellows on this track spend a year in London, studying for an MA in Inequalities and Social Sciences at the LSE. In addition, they take part in four bespoke fellowship modules led by AFSEE Executive Director Professor Armine Ishkanian and AFSEE Programme Leader Dr Sara Camacho Felix. These modules focus on foundational knowledge, policies for equity, challenging inequality and debates around inequality.
  2. Non-Residential Track: Fellows on this track remain in their home countries and work contexts while developing a practice-based project during the active fellowship year. They also join their residential colleagues online and face-to-face for the fellowship modules. Non-residential fellows receive a postgraduate certificate in Social and Economic Equity upon successful completion of the programme.

Lifelong Learning Community

Upon completion of the AFSEE Fellowship, all fellows join a lifetime fellowship community made up of members from all seven Atlantic Fellows programmes around the world. This network continues to provide support, learning opportunities, collaboration and connection for like-minded individuals committed to creating a more equitable world.

Vision and Impact of the Programme

The AFSEE Fellowship offers participants a holistic perspective on how to address current inequalities and drive systemic change. Fellows engage with leading academics and practitioners, sharing their experiences and insights. Together, they work to create a more equitable and inclusive world for all.

The Atlantic Fellows Initiative

Launched in 2017, the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity is generously supported by a £64 million donation over 20 years from The Atlantic Philanthropies. The programme aims to create a vibrant community of 400 fellows over two decades. To date, the AFSEE programme has brought together 116 changemakers from 49 countries, uniting individuals from Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, North and South America. As part of the wider Atlantic Fellows network, AFSEE fosters collaboration between changemakers to promote fairer, healthier and more inclusive societies globally.
