The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) Foundation is now accepting applications for the Community Sleep Health and Public Awareness Grant Programme.

The AASM Foundation invests in people, research and communities to improve the sleep health of all people. The Community Sleep Health and Public Awareness Grant supports a variety of projects and initiatives focused on addressing local, national and global sleep health needs. Through this grant programme, they are committed to promoting healthy sleep, raising public awareness and making healthcare for more accessible sleep disorders in communities.

Project Focus
  • This call for applications for the Community Sleep Health and Public Awareness Grant is open to humanitarian, educational or awareness projects that focus on improving sleep health, assessment and/or treatment of sleep disorders in the community. These projects can be one-off or longitudinal projects lasting up to 2 years.
  • Projects can focus on, but are not limited to:
    • Humanitarian service projects aimed at improving sleep health in underprivileged or disadvantaged groups.
    • Development , expansion and/or dissemination of public and/or patient education resources or awareness campaigns (e.g. AASM sleep education resources, AASM Sleep is Good Medicine campaign, development of new resources) to promote healthy sleep and highlight sleep as a pillar of health.
    • Implementation of evidence-based sleep disorder assessment (for individuals at high risk of sleep disorders), diagnosis, interventions or local community models for the care of people with sleep disorders.
  • Please note that projects targeting underprivileged or disadvantaged groups are of particular interest to the Community Grant for Sleep Health and Public Awareness.
Information on financing
  • The Community Sleep Health and Public Awareness Grant is organised into two categories:
    • Category I is for applicants seeking funding for projects of up to US$ 50,000 (including direct and indirect costs) and covers a project period of up to 2 years.
    • Category II is for those applicants seeking funding for projects of up to US$ 25,000 (including direct and indirect costs) and covers a project period of up to 1 year.
  • There are no restrictions on the distribution of expenses, but indirect costs are limited to 8%. The grant is issued as a contract between the AASM Foundation and the beneficiary's organisation.
Deliverables and expected results
  • The AASM Foundation's Public Awareness and Community Sleep Health Grant supports projects that will serve a specific population and create a positive impact on sleep health in the community.
  • Grant recipients are expected to fulfil the objectives described in the application. Major modifications to the proposed objectives require the approval of the AASM Foundation's Board of Directors or Executive Committee.
  • During the project period, or shortly after the project is completed, the project team must disseminate the knowledge acquired, the content developed or the project structure, as described in the project dissemination plan. This can be done through various means of dissemination, examples of which can be found in the Community Grant for Sleep Health and Public Awareness - Dissemination Guide.
  • The expected results and outcomes must be clearly stated in the application. The applicant must submit progress and final reports during the project period, describing the project's activities and results, as described below. Failure to fulfil the deliverables or submit progress or final reports may result in the termination of project funding.
Election criteria
  • The following individuals and organisations can apply:
    • Individuals from a charitable organisation with tax-exempt status,
    • Individuals who collaborate with a charitable organisation with tax-exempt status.
    • Applicants from outside the USA can apply; however, payment of the grant funds must be accepted by the organisation in US dollars.
  • Although it is not a requirement, they encourage candidates to be members of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
Ineligibility
  • Individuals or organisations that have a financial conflict of interest or have the potential to incur significant financial benefits from the proposed work and beyond the work itself are not eligible to apply.
  • Requests for support for projects that are not aligned with the focus of the Community Grant for Sleep Health and Public Awareness (e.g. projects research ) are not eligible. It is recommended that you meet with the AASM Foundation team to ensure that your project is aligned with the grant programme before submitting the application.
  • Applications to support ongoing operational aspects of existing programmes or project applications that do not significantly expand existing programmes are not eligible for application.
  • Current members of the AASM Board of Directors and the AASM Foundation are not eligible to apply and cannot be listed as project leaders or project team members during their term on the Board and for one year after the end of their term.
  • Note: In rare cases, members of the AASM and the AASM Foundation Board may act as unpaid consultants on an application; however, this requires the approval of the Executive Committee before the application is submitted.
