The Sigma Journalism Awards have started receiving entries for their 4th edition.
The Sigma Awards are a competition to celebrate the best data journalism from around the world. It also aims to empower, uplift and enlighten the global community of data journalists.
Geeky Nigeria reports that the 2022 edition of the Sigma Awards received 603 entries from 379 organisations in 76 countries/areas. One of the aims of the Awards is to unite, galvanise and expand data journalism communities around the world.
A cash prize of 5,000 USD will be divided among the winners, and they will also be sent to Perugia, Italy, to attend and participate in the International Journalism Festival 2023. In addition, the winners will be brought together to participate in and lead data journalism panels, discussions, and online workshops.
The criteria for the sigma awards are as follows. Please scroll to the bottom of the page before applying:
- Entries must be for works published in the calendar year 2022 (between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2022)
- Entries must be submitted via our online form.
- Entries must be received by 19 January 2023 at 23:59 ET to qualify.
- Applicants can submit as many projects as they like.
- Applications must specify whether they qualify as a large or small newsroom or as an individual, where applicable. Small newsrooms are defined as those with up to 35 journalists (including regular freelancers/contractors), or equivalent (for example, two part-time freelancers count as one person).
- Organisations that do not qualify under this definition but believe they belong to the category of small newsrooms can request an exception by sending a letter from the editor-in-chief explaining their justification to Marianne Bouchart, executive director at marianne@sigmaawards.org.
- Collaborative work has to be written up as a great essay.
- Participating organisations grant The Sigma Awards the right to use their material in its entry, including the organisation's name and logo, on The Sigma Awards website, and other marketing material surrounding the awards.
