The SAIS Female Founder Award is an initiative of “Scaling digital Agriculture Innovations through Start-ups” (SAIS), a project implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

SAIS's vision is to transform food systems by being the leading community in technological ventures in the developing world. The startups they support must offer solutions that lead to income growth, improved nutrition, or adaptation to climate change. With the SAIS Female Founder Award, their goal is to strengthen the visibility of women-led startups and promote a more equitable and dynamic environment so that women founders can become the next 'gazelles' and succeed in building a unicorn in Africa.

Benefits

The three winners will receive in-kind support worth up to €30,000 for first place, up to €15,000 for second place, and up to €7,000 for third place. This in-kind support may consist of vouchers and various customized services to better boost their business, including: 

  • Vouchers for special expenses (e.g., online training, software licenses, and other services).

Services:

  • Personalized coaching sessions with local and international experts based on individual needs. For example, marketing, investor relations, and pitching to further increase visibility.
  • Facilitating meaningful connections for the development of your business and potential expansion vision, providing integration with the local ecosystem.
  • Round-trip airfare to Paris and accommodation for the entire stay at VivaTech 2024.
  • Introduction and involvement in the SAIS Women's Leaders Circle Community, where women from the startup ecosystem participate in Input sessions with experts from different fields and peer-to-peer exchange sessions. These monthly meetings serve as a platform for insightful discussions, networking opportunities, and skills development tailored to the unique challenges faced by women in the entrepreneurial field.
  • SAIS Female Founder Award certificate and a seal for your website to recognize your business.

  • You are an African woman who co-founded and runs a start-up/growth phase company.
  • You must have technical experience in your field.
  • You promote visionary female leadership, support other female leaders, and contribute to women's economic empowerment.
  • You are promoting a culture that values diversity.
  • Your work has a positive impact on solving an important problem in the sector.
  • You contribute to the development of the initial ecosystem.
  • Your startup has a team of at least three people (including you as the founder) who work full-time for the startup.
  • Is your product/service digital or does it have a strong digital component?
  • Your product offers a powerful solution in the AgTech, FoodTech, or ClimateTech sectors in Africa.
  • Your company is registered and operates on the African continent.
  • Your company has an official registration certificate.
  • Your company was registered at least 2 years before submitting the application.
  • Your startup should have clear evidence of traction (customer base, revenue).
  • You have a unique value proposition in the market(s) where you operate.
  • Your start-up should have a clear and compelling business model (clear problem statement and defined customer segment).
