Applications are now open for the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Award for the Use of ICT in Education 2023 . The UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICT in Education recognises innovative approaches in harnessing new technologies to expand educational and lifelong learning opportunities for all, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Goal 4 on education.

Established in 2005 with the support of the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Prize rewards individuals and organisations that implement outstanding projects and promote the creative use of technologies to improve learning, teaching and overall educational performance in the digital age. An international jury selects the two best projects each year.

Theme

Each year, the Prize has a specific theme which, while aligned with UNESCO's mandate and values, advocates the responsible and ethical use of information and communication technologies. Theme for 2023:  Digital learning for a greener education.

Prize

  • Each prize winner receives US$ 25,000, a medal and a diploma during a ceremony at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

Eligibility

  • Open to:
    • Individuals
    • institutions
    • non-governmental organisations or other entities.
  • Be relevant to the theme of the year;
  • The project must have been running for at least a year;
  • The project and its organisation must not be affiliated to UNESCO or receive any funding from UNESCO;
  • The project must be public and free of charge.

  • Suitability of digital solutions : The project is supported by needs assessment and applies fit-for-purpose technologies to provide safe, inclusive and robust tools 
  • Pedagogical innovation : The project adopts pedagogical methodologies adapted to climate education to facilitate digital learning and student engagement 
  • Inclusion and equity The project should promote inclusion and equity in education, taking into account marginalised groups, minorities and students with different abilities. 
  • Evidence of impact : The project must provide evidence of impact on students achieved and predefined learning outcomes 
  • Potential for replicability and scalability The project must show evidence that it can be replicated in other contexts or have the potential to further optimise and scale its impact.

Application

  • Contact the appointing authority:  If your project/programme meets the criteria, contact an appropriate nominating body as soon as possible to inform them of your interest in applying for the Prize.
  • Create your account:  Request a user account  and indicate through which organisation you will be applying,
  • Go to  online platform  accessible and start filling in the online application form in English or French.
  • Present your project/programme in a clear and structured way, following the instructions provided on the form and respecting the word limit indicated. All supporting materials (e.g. publications, photos, videos) must be submitted electronically via the online system.
  • Make sure your project is nominated.
