Applications are now open for the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2024 . Created in 1997, the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize honours a person, organisation or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, and especially when this has been achieved in the face of danger.

The Prize was established on the initiative of UNESCO's Executive Board and is formally awarded by UNESCO on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day on 3 May. It is named after Guillermo Cano Isaza, a Colombian journalist who was murdered in front of the newsroom of his newspaper El Espectador in Bogotá, Colombia, on 17 December 1986.

Fund

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, on 12 August 1925, Guillermo Cano Isaza was assassinated on 17 December 1986 at the entrance to the office of the  El Espectador . where he had worked as an editor since the age of 27. bomb attack three years later.

The murder of Guillermo Cano is significant in terms of unpunished crimes against journalists. Cano was a victim of drug trafficking mafias, which he fearlessly denounced and whose harmful effects on Colombian society he warned about. On 17 December 1986, two hitmen waited for him outside his newspaper and fired the eight shots that killed him.

The magistrates in charge of the investigation were the target of threats and bribes, and some were murdered for rejecting such bribes. Guillermo Cano's life, his courage, his commitment to independent journalism and the tenacity with which he fought for his country are an example for the rest of the world to follow.

• A prize of $ 25,000 is awarded to the winner.

Eligibility

• UNESCO invites Member States to nominate candidates for the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize 2024, in consultation with their National Commissions, as well as with international and regional professional non-governmental organisations in the field of journalism and press freedom.
