Applications are now open for the Kurt Schork Award for International Journalism 2024 . The Kurt Schork Memorial Fund (KSMF) invites freelance journalists, local reporters and news analysts from around the world to submit entries for the 23rd annual Kurt Schork International Journalism Awards.

The Committee to Protect Journalists reports that the number of journalists killed and imprisoned in 2023 has reached near-record levels. As levels of violence and intimidation against media professionals rise, this recognition remains as vital as ever.

Named in memory of American freelance journalist Kurt Schork, who was killed in 2000 while working for Reuters in Sierra Leone, the Awards recognise the bravery of journalists who take great personal risks, often for little reward, to shine a light on the truth and hold power to account.

  • Freelance Award:  recognises freelance journalists who travel to conflict zones around the world, often at great personal risk, to witness and report on the impact and consequences of these events.
  • Local Reporter Award:  recognises the often overlooked work of journalists from developing countries or countries in transition who write about events in their home country.
  • News Fixer Award:  recognises the work of local journalists or experts, usually hired by foreign correspondents, whose guidance and local knowledge play an unknown but vital role in facilitating international coverage from difficult, dangerous or hostile locations.

Prizes

  • The awards recognise excellence and courage in exposing conflict, corruption, injustice and human rights issues, with the winners receiving a cash prize of 5,000 dollars.

Eligibility

  • Open to freelance journalists, local reporters and news analysts from around the world.
  • Participants in the Local Reporter and Freelance Awards must submit three articles each, published between 01 June 2023 and 31 May 2024.
  • The judges will be looking for journalistic excellence in the candidates' submissions and evidence of determination and courage in their stories.
