Deadline: 3 March 2024

Applications are now open for the IWMF Courage in Journalism Awards 2024 The IWMF's annual Courage in Journalism Award honors women and non-binary journalists who stand out for their extraordinary courage, persistence, and resilience. By doing whatever it takes to uncover the truth, they raise the bar for reporting under duress or in the face of censorship.

Sexual harassment, threats, attacks, government oppression, persistent glass ceilings, unequal pay, accusations of fake news, and a growing distrust in the media threaten press freedom worldwide. And women journalists are often the ones who suffer the most from these attacks. According to a UNESCO report, 731,300 of the female journalists interviewed experienced online violence as a result of their work.

The Courage in Journalism Awards show people that women journalists will not back down, cannot be silenced, and deserve to be recognized for their strength in the face of adversity. It honors the courageous journalists who report on taboo subjects, work in environments hostile to women, and share difficult truths.

The Courage in Journalism awards include the Wallis Annenberg Justice for Women Journalists Award. Every year, the Wallis Annenberg Justice for Women Journalists Award draws attention to women journalists who are detained, incarcerated, or imprisoned. Many of these cases receive worldwide attention at the time of detention, but fade from public scrutiny as new cases emerge. Sharing the stories of imprisoned women journalists is crucial to ensuring the safety of women journalists.
