Registration for the Save the Children Global Media Awards 2024 are now open. Save the Children is proudly launching a global media award to celebrate excellence in children's rights journalism, in honour of the centenary since the first Declaration of the Rights of the Child, drafted by its founder Eglantyne Jebb, was adopted by the League of Nations.
The competition welcomes professional journalists from around the world, inviting those whose storytelling has played a key role in exposing crucial child rights issues. Entries are accepted in all media, including print, broadcast (TV, radio and podcast), photography and digital (multimedia/data). There will be two winners: one from local/regional media and one from an international media outlet or broadcaster. By recognising exceptional stories both locally and internationally, they hope to show the power of the media in promoting positive change for children around the world.Prizes
- The winners will receive a trophy and a personalised certificate and will be invited to take part in an international press trip or Save the Children programme visit.
- All the finalists on the list will receive a personalised certificate.
Eligibility
- Open to all professional journalists aged 18 and over, except:
- individuals (and their partners and family members) involved in judging the competition; or employees of any Save the Children office or a Save the Children administrator.
- Entries must be original and published/broadcast in national, regional or international media between 31 July 2023 and 1 August 2024.
- Participants can take part in one or both categories, but they will only be honoured in one category.
- All submissions must clearly identify who the author is and which media outlet they represent.
- All entries must be sent in English or the original text must be accompanied by an English translation.
- Participating journalists must send a letter from the media outlet certifying that the story was published in their outlet and certifying the date of publication of the story.
- All the photographs entered must be the result of a photographic process with a camera.
- Submissions must be journalistically ethical, must not put children at risk and must respect children's dignity.
Selection criteria
Relevance: Convincing storytelling: Expose a children's rights issue or highlight children who take action for positive change through compelling narratives.
New Perspective: Present a children's rights issue to the vehicle's audience, either for the first time or in a new and innovative way.
Engaging and appropriate: is engaging and appropriate for the target audience.
Children's voices and protection
- Inclusion of children's voices : include case studies, first-hand accounts or testimonies from children (or their parents/guardians) to amplify their voices and provide a human perspective.
- Adherence to Child Protection: Comply with child protection standards and ethical reporting practices, ensuring that the rights of the children involved are not compromised and that their dignity and privacy are respected.
- Balanced and fair: Demonstrate impartial, objective and unbiased reporting on children's rights issues.
Impact and Innovation:
- Additional media coverage: Whether the article resulted in additional media coverage of children's rights
- Demonstrable impact: Evidence of positive changes for children, such as changes in policy or the law, or proof of a positive impact on the lives of those whose stories were told.
- Recognising Creativity: Prizes will be awarded to entries that demonstrate innovative and creative approaches to storytelling, capturing the audience's attention and raising awareness of critical children's rights issues.
Application
You will be asked to send your enrolment in one of the following ways:
- by sending preferred files such as PDF, JPG, MP3 or MP4 to our visualisation platform.
- For videos, send a link to your own viewing platform (e.g. vimeo/youtube).
Each entry must be sent together with the following information:
- Synopsis and impact statement.
- Credits for up to three (3) people linked to the registration in the description.
- A letter from the media outlet certifying that the piece was published in their vehicle and certifying the date of publication of the piece.
