Deadline: 9 February 2024

Applications for the FuturArc Award 2024 are now open. Launched in 2008, the FuturArc Prize is the first international green building design competition in Asia open to professionals and students. Its aim is to trigger continuous change and creativity in the art and science of building design by presenting innovative ideas and solutions for a sustainable future.

With a highly respected international jury and huge industry support, the Award allows green building design ideas and professionals to emerge onto the regional scene. The competition's winning entries are published in the magazine's annual green issue and on its website. Year after year, the competition attracts a growing number of participants from more than 15 countries.

Prize details

The FuturArc 2024 Award asks participants to propose architectural solutions for the continuation of life after ONE or BOTH of the following scenarios:

  • Climate Destruction: Any significant/extreme climate-related disasters triggered by hydro-meteorological (e.g. floods, storms, heat waves) or climatological causes (e.g. droughts, forest fires).
    • Consider how this year's heatwaves have broken historic records around the world, with scientists postulating that this is the hottest the Earth has seen in at least 120,000 years. The reality of a global climate catastrophe is not far off - in fact, large-scale disasters have been affecting vulnerable populations for a long time. How can architecture respond to this?
  • Final: The end of life expectancy - whether of humans; non-human species; ecosystems such as forests, coral reefs, arid lands; etc., due to hunger, disease, massive extraction, etc.
    • All living things perish. Current methods of treating expired matter tend to be carbon-intensive or require a lot of land, a resource that is scarce. On an urban level, facilities such as cemeteries/crematoria are still perceived negatively. Can the end of life, for humans or ecosystems, be dealt with in a way that brings hope and renewal for the future?

Task

Proposals must contain the following:

  • WHERE : Choose a site located in Asia. The area of the site should be a maximum of 5 hectares (50,000 square metres). The site can be your current place of residence or any place you know.
  • QUAL Choose which scenario(s) (Climate Destruction or The End or both) will be addressed based on the location selected:
    • If it's Climate Destruction, define and detail what climate disaster would affect the context of the selected location. Intense heat? Extreme drought? Land covered in sea water?
    • If it's Endings, specify the context of the endings. Is it the life expectancy of humans, non-humans or ecosystems?

Based on your choice, explain how this affects the context of the site in terms of physical/spatial conditions; community/population conditions; socio-economic conditions; and ecological/natural conditions.

  • WHAT What is the proposed sustainable architectural solution? These solutions can be new constructions or adapted to existing buildings, and can be of any type.
  • HOW is the solution to be applied and implemented.

Evaluation criteria

Judgement will be based on a clear explanation of the following corresponding to the task:

  • Relevance The selected scenario(s) (climate disaster and/or end of life expectancy) and solution must be relevant to the conditions and context of the site, fulfilling the brief in terms of design and functions, supported by a thorough analysis.
  • Integration Layers of interacting natural and man-made systems, including but not limited to climate responsiveness/resilience, socio-economic considerations, etc.
  • Impact How the proposed solution affects the community and the environment, including but not limited to optimising resources, improving health and well-being, biodiversity, etc.
  • Innovation Originality of the proposed solutions, including but not limited to the adoption of technological tools, application of regenerative principles, low-carbon strategies, etc.

Application

  • Entries must be submitted following the template provided, consisting of 5 panels per entry (4 for the design proposal + 1 for quotes/references).
  • The maximum file size of all 5 panels to be submitted is 15 MB; in A2 size, PDF format. If you are selected as a winner/merit, you will need to provide individual high-resolution images of your panels.
  • Images should only consist of drawings, rendered images, photographs and thumbnails.
