Applications are now open for the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Young Economist Essay Prize 2024 . The aim of the prize is to promote high-quality research on trade policy and international trade co-operation and to strengthen the relationship between the WTO and the academic community.

The winner of the 2023 WTO Essay Prize for Young Economists is Xiao Ma, from Peking University's HSBC Business School. His article, "College Expansion, Trade, and Innovation: Evidence from China", was awarded first place by the Selection Jury.

Prize

The WTO's annual essay prize offers an award of CHF 5,000 to the author(s) of the winning essay. In the case of a co-authored paper, the prize will be divided equally between the authors. The winning paper will be officially announced at the annual meeting of the European Trade Study Group (ETSG), the largest conference specialising in international trade. The award ceremony will take place from 12 to 14 September 2024 at the University of Athens in Greece. The winning author will receive funding to attend the meeting.

The document should address issues related to trade policy and international trade co-operation.
The author(s) of the article must hold or be in the process of completing a doctorate and, if they are over 30 years old, must not have defended their doctorate for more than two years. In the case of co-authored articles, this requirement applies to all authors.
In addition, to be considered for the prize, the essays must not exceed 15,000 words.

Application

Essays must be submitted by 3 June 2024. The Economic Research and Statistics Division of the WTO Secretariat will select the eligible articles by 17 June 2024 and the jury will make the final decision by 8 July 2024. Only the author(s) of the selected essays will be notified.
